Re: New Lightscribe driver 1.4.84.1 (March 2006)

This is getting to be a real MESS!!!

The software manufacturers have their own Lightscribe software.
Drive manufacturers have their own Lightscribe software.
Lightscribe.com has their own Lightscribe software.
These all have different installers and no way to uninstall them.

Ultimately there is no way of knowing which Lightscribe host software is running on a given system.

Fortunately yes we can. Unfortunately since we can't attach any image yet, I will show in text:

In Nero StartSmart, click Nero ProductCenter (the fire icon on the bottom right hand) and you will see "LightScribe API" version installed.

When I installed the driver from surething, I see in my Nero StartSmart that 1.4.84.1 is installed.

Thanks Zevia!!
No attachments necessary, your instructions were enough.
I also observed the 1.4.84.1 upgrade.

Unfortunately, I was able to uninstall 1.4.74.1 and delete the folder in the past. Now the folder cannot be deleted since the udgrade to 1.4.81.1 and I have yet to find a way to uninstall this version.

Normally, I would uninstall the previous version before installing the new version. Unfortunately, I inadvertently clicked on the 1.4.84.1 installer and it automatically installed the new version without prompting or warnings.

Similarly, there are no uninstallation options for the SureThing Lightscribe software. Was this version also overwritten by the new 1.4.84.1?

You are assuming that the Lightscribe 1.4.84.1 Software uses the Windows Installer.

I don't know that it does.

Normally I do not install applications on my system that don't have an uninstall option. That is why I waited until I discovered how to uninstall 1.4.74.1. I assumed this would be the same for 1.4.84.1 but I was incorrect.

Actually my intentions were not to install 1.4.84.1 as yet, I simply clicked on the file to see if it would prompt me to uninstall the previous version. The only prompt I received was "Installation Successful".

Re: New Lightscribe driver 1.4.84.1 (March 2006)

i watched the installation process when i installed 1.4.74.1. when it first began to install, it said, "Uninstalling previous lightscribe driver" or something to that effect, then it installed the new driver. maybe they all do that? i haven't installed version 84, as the official lightscribe page still has version 74 on it.

This version of 1.4.84.1 does not have the same installer.
It does not display installation prompts or progress.

When you click on the file it displays a blue screen until the installation is complete. At that point it displays a message that the installation was successful.

At least that's the way the software from the link above works.
http://www.surething.com/ST/Downloads.asp?CategoryID=16

This is the Lightscribe Host Software from the SureThing web site.

They need to stop this madness and standardize the software.
I'm already turned off on Lightscribe as it is, so this fiasco is not encouraging.
As it is now, I cannot remove the folder created by the 1.4.74.1 software because I assume that the Lightscribe service in the folder is still being used.

FYI
For those who suggest disabling the service LSSrvc.exe that is installed by the Lightscribe software:

It is my observation that Nero is extremely slow to launch from Nero StartSmart with this service disabled. I have not verified the functionality of the Lightscribe service disabled, I assume it should be intact, but Nero is slow to launch from StartSmart.

Re: New Lightscribe driver 1.4.84.1 (March 2006)

hmm. that is very frustrating. i use surething, but i am not going to update to thier version .84. surething works fine with the generic driver .74, so i will just stay with that one for now.

You ARE able to uninstall the lightscribe driver with this software... This program is not tied to applications installed only with Windows Installer. I am really unsure as to why you are so frantic about this situation?

This is not a case of being frantic.
I detest poorly written software and to me an application with an installer and no uninstaller is poorly written and should not grace my systems.

Unlike some people I don't solve my computer issues with a reformat every other month. One of the ways that I avoid this is by not installing garbage on my systems. I stay in control of my machines and ensure that they run lean and mean, and never cluttered with stuff that I have no control of.

For me reformats are by choice and never because I am forced to.

Thanks for your efforts anyway. They are always appreciated.

Re: New Lightscribe driver 1.4.84.1 (March 2006)

More confusion!!!

The last time I attempted it, the 1.4.74.1 Extended Contrast Utility would not work with the updated 1.4.84.1 Lightscribe Host Software.

Don't know if this will work, but the Lightscribe.com web site is offering 1.4.74.1 Lightscribe Host Software with 1.4.84.1 Extended Contrast Utility.

No kind of standardization!!!!

Re: New Lightscribe driver 1.4.89.1 (3 May 2006)

hernygo,
Thanks for the link....a Question...Have you loaded this version & do you still have the extended contrast capability?
I ask because I am using Ver 1.4.84 host software & the (ELCU)Extended Contrast update for this version, to increase or decrease the contrast in my LightScribe labels. I get a very good (but longer burn) label image using this utility. I no longer have to burn twice to get similar results.

Here is what worked for me...........
First, reset the Extended Label Contrast Utility. This disables it.
Apply the Nero v1.4.89.1 update.
Apply the v1.4.84.1 Lightscribe Extended Label Contrast Utility.

Although the update and the Extended Label Contrast Utility are different versions, they appear to work fine together.
