I really wish there was a change log for the updates.

I can't install version 1.4.39.1. I get the following error: "internal error 2723. updateShellCmdMustBeSet"

According to Microsoft's error reference page it means;
Not exactly enlightening as one would have hoped so the only thing I can think off is try clearing out the temp folders;
C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Local Settings\Temp

Make sure your not running under a limited account but as administrator.

Download & install the Windows 3.1 Installer.

Check to see if the Lightscribe service is running in control panel->administrative tools->services if it is try stopping it and then running the installer.

I don't see it anywhere as a requirement for Lightscribe but do you have SP2 installed ?

I don't know what happened to fix it, but it is working now! I installed Sure Thing in between attempts to install Lightscribe version 1.4.39.1. Don't know what it did but everything's good now.

Hmm... I usually go to lightscribe.com to get those updates and the latest version there is 1.4.44.1 I guess Nero does their own revisions?

From what I understand is that HP is making the LS drivers.

I just bought internal HP LS for 80 bucks at Wal-mart and have installed it and have DVD burned and ready for Label but will not reconize it and have never seen so much crap as for as drivers go in my Life !! what the Heck is the problem here ???

Hi, here a reply from The Netherlands in Europe. I had the same problem with Lightscribe, but I have the answer.
First you have to go to the Event Viewer. In the Application Log you see the following error of LightSrcibe Service:

Win32 Error : Function: [HurricaneClientProxy::OpenCDROMDevice] Error opening class device \\.\CDROM0 returned Win32 Error: 5 Description: Access is denied.

You can solve this problem as follows:

Choose Start > Run. Type "regedit" in the Open text box and then click OK.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\allocatecdroms

Change the valuation of 1 to 0

That's it and LightScribe will work!"

forget about the event viewer bit, just change the allocatecdroms value from 1 to 0 and BINGO! Lightscribe is awesome. btw got my hp dvd740i also from Walmart for $80. Officemax also has it for same $ with free shipping

my "default" was set to 1 - lightscribe was not enabled when this was the case, just weird
