OMG!!! I thought only EPSON had the rights to do that here in the US! Wonder if HP is paying any licensing fees or anything?

Re: HP Printer with CD/DVD Printing Capabilities

From doing some reading about the new HP D5160 it sounds like the Label software is lacking. Have not found any screen shots of it, only the comments from one or two folks who say they have it. Then again, there are those that feel the software that comes with the canons and epsons are lacking as well as those who swear by it.

Also read today that canon has released a direct print to CD/DVD in Canada but still nothing for us folks in the US.

That is what has me confused. Epson owns the US Patents on this stuff - how is HP able to get away with introducing one?

You can always get any Canon pixma and then buy the add-on CD/DVD tray from ebay.

Actually I picked up an iP4000 about 18 months ago from England, freight was minimal since an online site was offering them before they got shut down. It has served me nicely with one exception; it did not care for generic ink and the printhead was ruined. Picked up a new printhead from canon and have been off and running ever since. The power supply accommodates both 110-220 and canon even provided the plug in adapter for use here in the US.

I also have the R220 and find that I am far more satisfied with the direct printing of the canon. Ink dries much quicker, looks great, and seems to use much less ink that the Epsom.

As soon as one of these break down I plan on giving the HP5160 a go since it is now offered here in the US with direct print to CD capabilities.

Where did you find this info.? As far as I know because of legal reasons they have decided to stay out of that market here in the states!

Re: HP Printer with CD/DVD Printing Capabilities

Just made a order for the new HP since it is so little money's what the hell! Will post about it when it gets here in the next 2 days! I like the fact it uses the same cartridge as many HPs making it more easy and not to bad on price for new inks!

Perhaps the fact that both HP and Canon are coming out with ones in the US means that the Epson patent has expired?

If you can provide a link to the info about the Canon CD printer in the US, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Re: HP Printer with CD/DVD Printing Capabilities

Picked up the HP D5160 and I must say that the "print to CD" software encluded is lacking and marginal at best. Not to put in a plug for any one labeling software but Acoustica Label Maker supports the D5160 along with the canons and epsons and with Acustica I have produed some nice labels on the HP. Last week OfficeMax in the US offered it with 20.00 at the register so at 79.00 I figured it to be a nice Chritmas gift for the Grandson but of course I had to test it out first.

Re: HP Printer with CD/DVD Printing Capabilities

Just got the HP 5160 and I, like you, are dissatisfied with the CD/DVD printing capabilities. It IS better than nothing... but only a bit better. Does anyone know of any more software titles that support the 5160, other than Acoustica Label Maker...

So Epson is still the way to go in the US compared to that HP5160?

the HP is doing an excellent job as long as I use acustica label maker for printing to cd/dvd. To soon for me to make a final judgement as to my preference of it over my Epson. I do like the try feed system on the HP, much easier and does not feel so flimsy.

Sorry Tray feed system, the procedure for feeding the tray. On the Epson you must line it up with the arrows, not a big deal, however with the HP you just slide it in until it stops no aligning the tray.

Re: HP Printer with CD/DVD Printing Capabilities

So it auto-grabs in a perfect spot every time on the HP?

That'd be cool...

I need to get some Imation AquaGuard disks and one of them printers and try it out. I'm not the biggest Epson fan around, and have been waiting for some options and for smudge proof media. Now might be the time.
