Re: Write Data Problems

Ok, back again,

I've got the Verbatim disks and, guess what, no change. So we know it's not the media.

I'm now going to start from scratch and RIP another DVD to ISO and use that because then I can keep track of what settings I am using etc. I am going to use Casino Royale (only because it's sitting on the desk in front of me) as the test disk. I will be using the main feature disk and it is region 2.

I would also like to check with you what settings I should have set both for reading and writing.
Under "Read" I have I/O mode set to Auto.
Under "Protection" I have everything ticked and the drop down set to Region 2.

When it comes to the "Write" settings I'm not too sure what I should have selected. I get the same problems whether I select VSO or Nero as the burning engine, however Nero leaves the disk totally blank & reusable whereas VSO does write something to the disk which means it's unusable & I've got another coaster.
Also I don't know whether I should select Packet writing or SAO writing or what they mean, so advice on this would be helpfull.

So, if you have any advice on the above I would be grateful and in the meantime I will experiment and save some log files.

Regards

Russell

Re: Write Data Problems

Hi Russell. The settings StormJumper suggested should work fine but if you are going to burn this on a DL slow the burn speed down to 2.4 or 4X max. If you want this to be uncompressed, be sure to set the media size to DVD9. Let us know what happens, and post a burn log (either VSO or Nero will leave one, but I would prefer that you try VSO again at least once, since we already have their customer support involved).

Re: Write Data Problems

Ok, I think I have got to the bottom of the problems.

I "Cloned" Casino Roysle to ISO and then wrote that ISO to DVD with the Write Data mode and it worked fine.

So, I went back to the original ISO that didn't work. As an experiment I tried using ImgBurn to see if that would work and I noticed something that was quite surprising (see attached screen shot)...

[IMG][/IMG]

... ImgBurn was reporting that the capacity of layer zero on the blank DVD was 2,086,912 however, when I checked the INI file for the ISO it was reporting the layer change as 2259504 which is beyond the L0 capacity.

So I have been doing some tests with other DVD's and these are the results

Casino Royale R2 LayerBreak=2084960 Works
Alien R2 LayerBreak=2045248 Works
An American Werewolf In London R2 LayerBreak=1999200 Works

28 Days Later R2 LayerBreak=2259504 Doesn't work
Aliens R2 LayerBreak=2138416 Doesn't work
Vanilla Sky R2 LayerBreak=2192128 Doesn't work

As you can see, any film with the layer break above 2086912 doesn't work.

Have you come across this before, and is it because the original DVD's were non standard. Is the layer capacity different between commercial DVD's and blank DVD's.

Hope this all helps anyway, and many thanks for everyones help in identifying this problem.
