Why Generic can't play on standalone Divx players?

When saving movies in the generic format those cannot be played on stand-alone players (I tried 2 a Philips and a Denver). Those players play without problems AVIs contiaing DivX videos. DOes anybody have had the same problem and found a solution?

I actually have previously posted in an other thread asking for a new feature to run an external DivX decoder. I thought it was best to post again and make clear that the only reason I was asking for this is because I want my avi to be compatible with stand-alone players and perhaps somebody here has a solution that does not require Fengtao to do some major code changes.

Thanks.

Re: Why Generic can't play on standalone Divx players?

_chef_ thanks but I am not sure I understand. Both my Philips and my Denver are cheap and divx capable (I played hundreds of divx on them), so there is something in the saved video stream that makes it incompatible. Both player come up with the error messgae "unsupported video format".

Thanks.

Hi alex60,
please check your used resolution. Standalones can play only max. resolution of 720x480. They play well AC3 & MP3 soundformats in AVI/DivX/XviD.
If the used player is not DivX/XviD certified, you can't play correctly large files (higher than 1gb). Make sure too, that DVDFab used the "generic.avi.xvid.audiocopy" or "generic.avi.xvid.mp3" profile.
EDIT: 704x400 gives best quality and you do not waste of GBs and standalones play fine....

Thanks,

I'll try and post back the result. As far as I understand the xxx.audiocopy profile will pass the audio thorugh without recompression (i.e in 5.1 format). Won't that take up lots of space?

I used only 5.1 Audio, because it sounds better. Of course, it needs more space. But its on your own, what sound you like.

True, sorry for the confusion, I misread your post...
In your case the problem probably lies within the used resolution, bitrate or a non-mainstream/standard encoder option.

Re: Why Generic can't play on standalone Divx players?

Yes, I changed the resolution to 720x400 and now it plays on all the players. Thanks to all.
