we had a discussion a while ago on how to use the VOB passthru option to create stand-alone VOB files, and how you can then fool windows media player into playing them by renameing as .MPG.

I have a related question on audio streams. Using vob passthru I can create a stand-alone .VOB on my HD, from a DVD which has multiple audio options e.g. 5.1, sterso etc.

They are still accessible when I play the stand-alone .VOB in powerdvd but are just called audio 1, audio 2 etc, so it's not immediately obvious which is which.

But what happens when you rename as .MPG and use windows media player. - does it just default to whatever is the 1st audio stream , or will it choose the 2 channel stereo option by default?

I don't think media player can cope with .vob files which have been renamed to .mpg, if the file contains 2 audio streams. In my test the sound stutters and breaks up in media player but is fine ( on either audio stream ) in PowerDVD.

Personally I gave up on WMP several years ago. VLC Media Player with the ffdshow codec package will play almost anything (and will play even slightly corrupted files that WMP won't touch). For DVDs where player-like controls and functions are useful, WinDVD or PowerDVD are hard to beat.
/EDIT/ See my post in your other thread. If you use Merge mode, you can de-select all but one audio, then make the VOB passthroughs using the Merge temp files.
