VLC Media player stopped working

Hi, I just updated my DVDFab Platinum, automatticly, and now VLC media player, which up untill now was what I was using to watch movies, now does not work. It will show the menus, but then only flashs random colors on the screen. Like some weird protection scheme started working or something. Anyone else had this problem?
Also, I installed an another video card into my laptop, which I suspect may be the problem.
Dell E1505
Nvideo Go7300 (used to me an ATI X1300)
Vista home prem
Dou Core
2 gig ram
External 2.0 USB hard disk ( where the movies are )

Re: VLC Media player stopped working

Hi gshadoan and welcome to cdfreaks,

Yeah, my money is on the video card as well. I have never heard of an issue with VLC and Fab. As a matter of fact, I've never had a problem with VLC...period. I have it installed on 5 desktops and 1 laptop. It's been my favorite player for a long time...

Have you started to troubleshoot the drivers and card yet?

what are you using now to watch movies? is the new media player software working correctly?

what type of video file are you playing? video_ts folder, iso, xvid, h264, etc...? can you still play a dvd-rom disc with vlc?

ive had a problem twice with playing videos with vlc. both times the video had a blue tone, like the color needed adjusted. however i had not changed any settings in vlc. (never do always use default). what ive had to do both times was to uninstall the driver for my video card and let windows reinstall.

Re: VLC Media player stopped working

yeah, it was the weirdest thing. DVD's still played fine, with both VLC and MS media player (the only 2 I have on my machine), and the files I was playing were ripped by DVDFab onto an external hard disk, just in there own directorys. I would point the VLC to open a dir, and it played fine. Then it stopped working, at some point, I am now sure it was a combonation, of two things. A new video card, and an older version of VLC. I updated the video drivers, off the Dell website, and updated the version of VLC I was using, and it now works fine. Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: VLC Media player stopped working

Pull the video card out and clean it up with a can of air and reseat the card and see if it helps.

sometimes it's better to just fix it & move on, rather that try to explain the original glitch. I did something to my PC a few months back & suddenly all of my AVI files were playing back upside down!
All that I "think" I did was to trial a different DVD player or ripper & then uninstall it & splat - couldn't watch anything.
But system restore cured it, thankfully which was a better outcome than happing to flip the monitor thru 180%
