A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

Hi all, I am new here and am really looking forward to your help.

I just spent 49euros to get the DVDFab Platinum and with the first simple action it crashed. I tried to copy a region 1 DVD and convert it to a Generic format, but I cannot even do anything, as the moment I click on "Generic" on the left menu the whole thing crashes, already tried 3 times.

So I said, ok, let me make a full DVD copy. So after 5 hours of waiting for the recording, I now have a DVD that I cannot watch - there is no picture and very very very bad sound, you cannot even make out a single word.

Can someone PLEASE help me, as I really start regretting that I got this product and start wanting my money back

I am in Region 2, the DVD I tried to copy is "Attila", if this helps

Thanks...

Please give us some information to help you. What type of media are you using, what are the specs of your computer, what kind of DVDRW are you using. This kind of stuff. Thanks, we will get you sorted. The operating system would also help, are you using Vista or XP?

Hi, thanks for reacting so fast.
the specs of my PC are below:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

TOSHIBA
Personal Computer
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
2.99 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

DVD/CD-ROM drive: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-820S

In the meanwhile I went into the settings and unticked the preview option for the Generic format. I think the preview malfunctioning was the reason it was crashing. Without the preview active I was able to access the Generic format settings and to start the conversion, but after converting about 3minutes of the film the process aborted and gave me a message that it successfully converted the film (??). I checked these 3 minutes and again the picture is a mess and the sound is impossible to listen to.

If you need any more information from my side, let me know and I will happily provide it.

I do have admin rights on this PC, as this is my home computer

Thank you!

Realized that I did not answer the question above: I am copying from the Region 1 DVD disk onto an external hard drive (Maxtor)

Re: A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

proceed in 2 steps -
1. copy the DvD to your HD using full disc or customise or main movie & see if ithat copy plays OK.

2 then convert it to generic, from the HD copy..

post the logs.

Thanks for this, I did a clean uninstall, cleaned up the registry, defragged, rebooted, downloaded the application again from the website, installed, tried to use it again and got the error message below. DVDFab still crashed, not much changed

Hi, thanks. Already tried this, see above. The full disk option (to HD) took me 5 hours and the result was impossible to watch (both picture and sound)

Re: A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

I searched for the logs in the Administrative Tools ==> Computer Management. I looked in the Event Viewer for any error messages from both Application and System after the time when I re-installed and there is nothing that I can specifically relate to DVDFab, just some information messages

i take it you mean using main movie mode, and not a dvd to mobile mode. however downloading ffdshow and vlc may help with that too.

please download VLC. completely free. great player.

find the ripped file either video_ts folder or iso file. right click, then play with VLC. http://www.videolan.org/

i assume you are trying to use windows media player. (you havent told us) if so stop using wmp, wmp is not good. suggest using vlc 0.8.6b found here http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/

also please download ffdshow. completely free. great codec.

Hi, thanks for the advise. I use WinDVD (4) to play the film and yes, I did use the main movie mode, not a dvd to mobile mode, as that does not work at all for me (the process does not complete and stops after copying about 3 minutes only)

I have ffdshow already, but will download VLC this evening, as you suggest

Will let you know if it helped

thanks again

Re: A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

Hi angour,
Received your pm, no problem.
I'll post my answer here on the forum so anyone reading the thread has all the info.

I don't have much to go on based on your pm,

but I suspect your problem with nero cd-dvd speed lies with the aspi access layers.
I did glance at your thread...unfortunately I don't see your burn log (? deleted), but you are apparently using XP.
You also have a matshita drive...these are problematic and are some of the worst drives on the market for burning dvds...
sorry don't shoot the messenger.

Anyway, uninstall the drive from the IDE controller (probably secondary controller) in device manager.
Reboot and XP will reinstall the device and assign the appropriate drivers...

If this fails, do the same thing, but this time physically unplug the drive. Power up and then down again.
Now replug the drive and power up...
this should do it and should also fix any DMA issues...that I suspect you're having as well.

In addition, any problems specific to Fab
Fab > Common Settings > Read > I/O Mode >select SPTI.
If SPTI is already selected, try Auto

Good luck

could you let me know where I get these burn logs from? Is this something that I can pull from DVDFab? I thought I had to look at the even log in windows and there was nothing there that related to DVDFab

I did not mention that I have a laptop, so I am not sure what I can do with the drive. I definitelly cannot "physically unplug" it

Re: A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

First of the MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-820S is a very picky drive about media. Make sure you use quality media, like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. Please make sure you have your Matshita as the Source and the External HD as the destination. Then when ther files are on your HD you should try and play them. The drive itself is a nightmare. If you do a google search you will see what I mean. Anyway if you can play them from the HD you should be able to burn them.

Re: A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

You really shouldn't have to do anything physical...simply uninstall the ODD in device manager as I suggested. There are 2 links in my sig that will help with this as well as the presumed DMA issue.

The burn logs are easy.
The default location is:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log

As Alan and I have both said, the drive itself is frequently a huge problem...again, no offense. They often are installed in laptops, esp. Toshiba. As suggested by Alan, try and stick with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media...hard to go wrong with either.
The burn log will give us some valuable info so we can start to nail down a solution for you.

Hi. I am not writing to a DVD, but on a HD. I did try to play the files from teh HD after the conversion and they had the problems I mentioned earlier - no picture and bad quality sound.... I am not even at the stage where I could burn the files from the HD to a clean DVD disk. I first need to be able to rip the DVD to my HD... Though what you wrote about the problems with Matshita drives does not make me more optimistic...

The CPU details that you are asking about above is the part of the error message that I received after the DVDFab crashed

Re: A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

As you said, you've not yet successfully ripped a movie to your hdd, let alone burn a disc, so the burn log is really of no use except to ID your OS and burner and firmware which we already had.

Please follow my advice in post #15 and don't worry about physically unplugging the drive...it's no big deal, but it's rarely necessary anyway.

Re: A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

maineman,

I will try to do this tonight, am at work now. I read the information in the links in your signature (DMA fixes and IDE controller drivers) and will try to do all that.

Thanks for all the advice, will keep you guys posted

Re: A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

hello guys,

So here I am again. I did all that was mentioned by maineman in post#15. Uninstalled the secondary channel, run the VB script to sort out the DMA, also manually checked that the channels are set to "DMA when available".

I thought I would try to rip another DVD to my HD, just to exclude the possibility that there is something wrong with the Attila disk, even though it is new.

I also tried the VideoLAN player.

Unfortunately, I still have the same issue - the .avi file is very bad quality... the video and sound are both quite messy....

Any more ideas?

Re: A very frustrated new user - DVDFab so far failed

so lete's go again from the beginning.

1.is your laptop able to produce good quality sound and picture when you play an original dvd from the DVD drive ?

2. If yes, then rip that dvd at 100% to hard drive with main movie or full disc & play the hard drive copy with the same player - you should see & hear exactly the same as in step 1.

get step 2 working OK before worrying about how to burn or how to convert to mobile modes.

CBM is exactly correct.

Everything generally works fine for all of us so we need to start eliminating where the problem is actually occuring.
