Suggestion to improve automatic splitting algorithm

I recently purchased DVDFab Platinum and used it to back up "Blades of Glory" (Region 1). I attempted to use the built in split mode to back it up to two single layer discs, and noted that it wanted to do the following:

1. Put just part of the main movie and all the special features on the first DVD, and

2. Put just the second half of the main movie on the second DVD.

Meanwhile, the main movie with all the languages and subtitles, and all the menus EASILY fit on one single layer DVD. It therefore seemed more sensible for the default behavior to be the following:

1. Put the entire main movie and menus on the first DVD, and

2. Put all the special features on the second DVD.

While I went ahead and ripped the DVD with DVDFab, I found it difficult to manipulate manually to split it this way, so I ended up using CloneDVD2, which I also licensed, to split it this way. CloneDVD2 seems to provide more control for this type of splitting operation and I was able to easily split it as suggested above. I then used PGCEdit to clean up each DVD, and even made the special features DVD immediately start within the special features menu, and blocked the ability to go to the main menu, etc.

I recommend that DVDFab's default splitting option be to put the main title and menus on a single DVD if it will fit, either with or without the deletion of some audio tracks, instead of splitting the main title across discs.

Re: Suggestion to improve automatic splitting algorithm

Hi FordMan,

1) You can change settings "DVD to DVD -> Split" to tell DVDFab to put titles on Disc2 as much as possible.

2) You can use "Customize" to split DVD using your own way, whatever you can do with CloneDVD, DVDFab can it too.

Anyway, we do have plan to improve "Split" feature to make it very flexible.

Best Regards,
Fengtao

OK, I'll have to try again, but I did try the option you suggested in 1) above, and it didn't yield the desired results. Yes, I admit that since CloneDVD doesn't have a split feature, I ran the source through CloneDVD twice, once writing the main title and menu to one DVD directory on my hard drive, and a second time to produce a second DVD directory with the special features. I suppose I could have ignored the split option in DVD Fab and used it twice in a similar manner.

Thanks,
FordMan
