subtitles glitch with customise mode & xfiles & windvd7

results of some further testing that I've done since I raised this in an earlier thread.
There's a problem whih only appears when copying Xfiiles series discs but only when using customise mode & then only when playing with Windvd7

here goes.

test 1. Original DVD in drive, watch with windvd7 - no problem - subtitles are selectable while movie is running as you'd expect.

test 2. main movie copy of sinlge episode. watch it with Windvd using hard drive copy - no problem.

test 3. use customise mode to select only the 4 main episodes + preserve menus + remove warnings , My UIoptions set for english only audio & subtitles. PROBLEM: Now when I watch this copy in Windvd then I can't toggle the subtitles on/off during an episode ( but I can if I use powerdvd to watch with).
The only way to change subtitles with Win DVD for this copy is now to stop the Windvd program & change the program settings. If Windvd settings are for english subtitles then the subtitles will be stuck on throughout the film., If windvd subtitles settings are for default subtitles then subtitles will be stuck off. but either way they are not toggle-able, when I bring up the windvd subtitle menu during the film it is greyed out.

I can't reproduce this on other DVDs but I don't have anything else that's episodic i.e. structured with 4 episodes per disc like Xfiles for additional testing. My other dvds are music concerts whcih don't have subtitles anyway, or are single movies.

I guess either the xfiles disc is authored in a slightly non-compliant manner or there's a glitch in WinDVD, as I don't get this problem if I play a customised copy into a standalone DVD player.

I've tested two different Xfiiles series origianl DVds & get the same results with each.

What method are you using to open the movie files with WinDVD? I only have WinDVD 5, but its subtitle behaviour is a a little strange sometimes unless I double click on the VIDEO_TS.IFO file to open and play the movie. It also sometimes ignores subtitles that I set as default play with the green arrow in Customize/No Menus.

Yes, I also double click on video_ts.ifo to launch.
I suspect that the quirky subtitle handling is due to the way that WInDVD works, rather than due to the way that Fab customises.

As it only seems to affect this one series of Discs and only in customise, I can just use full disc instead & waste a little disc space on 10 languages that I don't speak!

I do prefer Windvd to Powerdvd, particularly with Xfiles which are sometimes very dark. (maybe that's a side effect of PAL versions or maybe they are intentionally dark).
Windvd seems to balance the colour better + it has keyboard shortcuts for increase/ decrease brightness. I have a wireless keyboard & so using windvd keyboard shortcuts is almost as good as a proper DVD remote ( & hopefully one day I'll even manage to memorise them! )

Try Merge mode insted of Customize, even though you are not really merging anything. You will need to have all but one of the episodes on your hard drive first. Use the original disc as the Source for the first episode, then the HDD folder for the others. This worked for me once on a problem disc (but there will be no menus). I also much prefer WinDVD for many of the same reasons you mentioned.
