Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

I have been using DVDFab Platinum to convert DVDs for my iPod. I am not impressed. Using DVDDecrpter and AutoGK I can convert a whole movie in about 45 minutes to XviD (720 wide, 1400MB). That is running two passes. Using DVDFab Platinum, iPhone profile, single pass it takes about an hour. ONE PASS?!? CPU usage ranges between 2% to the occasional spike to 95%. That is running IE 7, uTorrent and Yahoo Messenger along with DVDFab Platinum. I thought that Platinum could handle the quad core. It is very disappointing. I figured going from a 5200+ X2 to a Q6600 would definately help my speeds. Nope, not really..

My specs are:
  • Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
  • 2048MB Corsair Extreme DDR2-800
  • Intel-based G31 motherboard
  • EGVA 8600GTS (if that matters)
  • LiteOn DH16A1S SATA DVD Burner
  • WD 500GB SATA HD
  • DVDFab Platinum 4.0.5.5

Can anyone help me sort out the speed issue. If it's the read speed of the DVD Writer, will going with a stand alone DVD-ROM significantly speed things up?

Also, why is it that whenever I convert a movie, I can actually disable the subtext. But when I do episodes from TV shows, I cannot seem to disable the subtext. I'm trying to convert my SG1 and Smallville collection to toss on my iPhone, but everytime, no matter how I try, I cannot get it to convert without the subtext. Talk about making a guy want to bang his head into the keyboard. *sighs*

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

Not sure what is happening with your system, but another lucky Q6600 owner posted last week conversion rates of 171 frames per second. Use the forum advanced search to see if you can find the post, I think it had system specs. Had tons of RAM as I recall.

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

It works great for me, and I only have a dual core AMD Opteron. Instead of hating a program I would have taken advantage of the free trial, if I liked it I would buy it, if not I would I would pass, but I never never would get to a point of Hating anything.

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

Ok, hate might have been a little strong. I used it on my 5200+ X2. It seemed fine on that machine. I just expected more with a quad. I just see the huge difference it made with AutoGK and expected something simular with DVDFab.

BTW Signals, if you can find that thread, I would appreciate the link.. I'm trying to find it, but no luck, unless it was in a different forum category..

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

I rarely come in this neck of the woods but the title grabbed my attention. From reading your first post in this thread the issue isn't the Q6600 or DVDFab for that matter. Here is your issue. I use the C2D e6600 and that cpu will only beat my processes by 2 minutes tops. Look at my sig same speed of RAM too. OK you probably want to know what it is now. It's called bottlenecking. Yours sucks to be blunt. Your CPU is slowing down because the RAM is 800 and your CPU wants to use 1066 if I remember right on that CPU? I bet your times would definitely increase allot if you were to use 1066 to 1333 DDR2. It's not cheap but the CPU has to hold back due to the rest of the systems speed in dealing with things.

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

That's interesting.. Is there anything else that can be done without replacing week old ram? Looks like my first choice is going to be replacing the motherboard. It's an OEM Acer board. I'm thinking an Asus PE5-VM at Newegg. Then maybe the RAM. If it is the RAM, that would explain the maybe 3 minute difference between the Q6600 and my 5200X2..

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

Reading some of the posts on Newegg about the DDR2-1066 worries me.. I was looking at the OCZ SLI stuff, but the Mushkin is a better deal IF you can get the rebate. But they all say that RAM is VERY, VERY touchy about the ammount of power you send it. So I guess I will be trying a new motherboard then ram.. Oh well.. When I order these upgrades, I'll see how it affects the numbers..

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

I hope it does well for you I personally am holding off on the Q6000 series and going for the Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache, really nice and good reviews as well.

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

Considering the deal I got at Best Buy for this thing, I couldn't pass it up.. It was a "clearance deal".. $550 for this.. Figured at about $100 for Vista plus $247 for the Q6600, plus the DVD burner and 500GB WD hard drive it was worth it.. Good starting platform.. I have upgraded the RAM, the power supply, the video card, and added a pair of 750GB Seagates for giggles.. Next will be replacing the motherboard.. Then the RAM, maybe.. Anyways, it's very nice for AutoGK atleast..

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

Not bad at all and for the AutoGK I haven't tried it personally but I never depend on just on application either.

Re: Reasons I hate DVDFab Platinum

Well, AutoGK is just a front end for a bunch of other apps.. *shrugs* It's easy and I can do a ton of conversions away from the PC.. I store my movies on my computer in xvid format.. That way my kid doesn't destroy the out of print Disney movies she likes.. I don't copy DVDs for backups for myself or friends.. That's why I like Auto.. Anyways.. I think once I get this machine the way I want it, it will probably go Hackintosh anyways.. Who knows..

There still is that goofy issue with not being able to disable the subtext on the TV shows.. M*A*S*H is waiting with Smallville and SG-1.. Anyone?

BTW, the Q6600 is only about 5 fps than the other machine..
