Problem with Live Free or Die Hard

I just bought this movie today and have to say wow what a movie. Great action film. Problem is when i went to make a backup copy of it through DVDFab Platinum it didn't work. I thought it did until i watched it again and half way through the movie just froze. I also tried other methods like, DVDFab free version and then DVD Shrink (no luck). Any help with this would be great. I don't want to ruin the original.

Re: Problem with Live Free or Die Hard

Hi jmazz and welcome to cdfreaks,

I had no problems creating a bkup with platinum 4.0.1.2. - R1, Full disc with the PathPlayer features utilized such as,
"Change DVD playback order > Jump to main title when disc inserted > Remove annoying PGCs (like FBI warnings)."

What mode did you use?
SL or DL?
What media are you using (MID)?
If this is your only failure like this, I would look to your blank media.
Any changes in media, burn speed, firmware, etc., etc.,?

Please post the burn log from this movie.

Re: Problem with Live Free or Die Hard

Hi jmazz,

I think it should be a burning problem, please try following steps to see the result:

1. lower the burning speed.
2. try better media.
3. update drive firmware.

Best Regards,
Fengtao

Re: Problem with Live Free or Die Hard

Thank you for replying back to my post. To answer your questions I am using Taiyo Yuden media SL and I am burning at 4x. I have pathplayer enabled and I just don't understand why it won't work. Like I said when I'm watching the unrated version of the movie it freezes exactly at 31 mins. Could you possibly give me more suggestions. That would really be appreciated. Thank you.

Just to add to my last reply. Sorry but I meant to mention that I am trying to make the backup copy in Full mode with an R1 version of the movie.

I understand you did this movie in full disc mode to an SL disc.
This represents a huge amount of compression, particularly for a video-rich, action flick like this one.

I have the same version, unrated R1,WS. Trying to fit Full disc on an SL disc yields the following:
Quality: 58% (7574 MB -> 4460 MB).

I see where you have this same discussion going in another thread...bummer.
This serves only to fragment discussion and advice and frustrate anyone trying to follow along or add.
I take it, you've ruled out a dirty, scratched, defective original?

And yeah, I agree...I love this flick...

Re: Problem with Live Free or Die Hard

Thanks mainman for your reply. To answer your question, No I don't have a scratched or dirty disc. It's funny because I did the move hairspray (chick flick if you don't me saying so) LOL and it worked perfectly. I don't get it. I've used the burning engine built in with platinum and I've tried burning it with nero as well. Doesn't work. I'm at a loss with this one. I just got the new version of Nero 8 and I'm wondering if that's the problem. Would you know if DVD Fab conflicts with, AnyDVD. Not that I use AnyDVD but i have it just as another measure. Please let me know. Talk to you soon.

Re: Problem with Live Free or Die Hard

Hi again jmazz.

I got your pm, glad to try to help...

Is there a reason you're reluctant to post a burn log?
It will help a great deal to narrow down the issue(s)...instructions above.

Yes, AnyDVD can be a problem, but Fab should alert you that an on-the-fly-decrypter is running.
In any case, AnyDVD is a windows based driver that runs in the background. It's not sufficient just to not run it, you must disable/exit the program so it does not run. This is also true of other on-the fly decrypters, such as dvd43.
Just so were clear, don't uninstall AnyDVD, just prevent it from running while using Fab.
I generally prevent this type of application from starting in msconfig > startup. Then, if I choose to open it, I can, but it won't start every time I boot.

Like I said, there's a good chance this movie is way over compressed, but post the burn log and we'll go from there. This will answer many of the other questions.

Re: Problem with Live Free or Die Hard

Thanks once again for the reply Mainman. I did find the problem. I tried burning the movie on another computer today and found that it was the new version of Nero that was causing the problem. Just a little heads up for all of those that might be interested in the new Nero 8 version. Don't install this program because it caused me quite the greef with my system. So there, I don't have this problem anymore or at least hopefully. I uninstalled Nero and I hope that it doesn't happen again. I tried to burn another movie that I purchased (Santa Clause 3) and found that it had the same problem. Again when I tried it on another computer that wasn't corrupted with this new version of nero it worked just fine. DVDFab Platinum with it's own burning engine works just fine. Thanks again Mainman and I hope that this may help others with the same issues. Take care.

Re: Problem with Live Free or Die Hard

My backup of Live Free or Die Hard (Unrated Version) hestitates at the same place as Jmazz. It does continue however. It occurs when the chapters change from 11 to 12.

I do not believe it is the burner.

I've tried with 3 different copies to back it up, there is a 5-6 seconds skip in Chapter 11 at the 30:04 point in the file, it has one word in that 5-6 seconds
