Well, today I tried writing to the MIS Verbatim DL discs and it threw the same - exact - error that it did with the Memorex. It matches word-for-word except that I set the speed to the slowest possible with no change whatsoever.

This behavior is indicative of an issue with either the drive (in which case I need to move this whole thread to the drive section) or it is DVDFab yet again. I am seriously starting to question using this software...

Anyone have any other ideas...???

Sorry for your persistent trouble. I don't think this is a software issue. In reading over your thread (getting old is not helping my retention), I'm starting to wonder if you have a bad or misflash.
I know quite a few members (alan1476, Bob, StormJumper, to name a few) who have this drive and it is an outstanding performer.

In Fab, do you have Set booktype to DVD-ROM enabled?
Please disable this. This may be interfering with the burn since bitsetting is not supported by samsung for this drive and similarly, is not supported by Fab.

I still have SB01 firmware for this drive and while I'm not really recommending this to you, the patch utility will allow you much more freedom in terms of troubleshooting this drive.

Personally, I stayed with SB01 as it works perfectly with all my media, both SL's and DL's. I try to live by my sig, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Generally, when I deviate from this, I dig myself quite a hole.
I'm tempted to try the bitsetting patch for this, however.
I've done a great deal of this with my Liteon drives (total about 10 of 'em in my family) and was always able to "recover" the drives. (Liteys have the MTK chipset as well...very forgiving).

I think I'm gonna go for it...

This patch utility works like a charm...very, very nice!
I took my favorite SB01 and patched the firmware to include:

Retain book type after eject
Default book type DVD-ROM
RPC1 (Region free)

How sweet is this...

Although the process is fairly simple, there are a few things to keep in mind:
The newer Samsung firmwares are bundled in a One Click Firmware Upgrade, so you'll have to extract the .bin file and use this instead of the .exe file.
As my good friend Bob said, it's a simple matter to extract the .bin file by right clicking.
Bob also cautions against using the Live Update.

Any problems or questions, just give a holler, If I'm not around, I'm sure Bob will help out. You won't find a more knowledgable, nicer guy when it comes to burners...

Personally, I've never used the live update. Once I got my 203B running well with the MKM 003 and it continued to perform well with YUDEN T02 and MKM 004...I was perfectly happy and never budged again re: firmware for this drive.

In exploring options for quixotic_1, this patch utility...courtesy of C0deKing, came to my attention. It's an outstanding utility...
Anyway, schranzi believes "live update" killed his drive and Bob says it's crappy. Personally, if Bob says it's crappy, that's a good enough reason for me to steer clear...

yeah, i had a 712uf, - very expensive, no DL, and not up to todays standards anymore, but the 810sa will write to most anything, i have to also say that philips will read (the model i have) discs that other can't make it through the layer break on a DL.

Anyway Sammy site is all messed up now with the firmwares just to add another reason not to use it. It's better to stick with the firmware you are using if it works ok for the media you have. If you have problems then yeah upgrade BUT make dang sure it is the correct one! I've already seen many peoples drives screwed up from auto update and now the site is all messed up........

I like my drives to much than to trust the updater to mess my drives up is all. Use it at your own risk!
