| ISOCompression save quality and space Hi When i use Dvd fab platinum,on clone mode,to convert Dvd to ISO, is there a way to compress the ISO file, untill i want to watch the movie, to save space on my hard drive, and retain the full disc, and quality, like a zip function zipped when not in use, unzip when in use. Will it compress much ? Do you lose any quality, to compress a ISO file ? Do you encounter problems compressing, ISO file's ? How do i do this ? Many thank's |

| Re: ISOCompression save quality and space The data on the DVD Video is already compressed and you can't compress further using data-compression techniques like Zip or RAR (or at least not any worthwhile compression, perhaps a compression that saves on the order of a couple of MB for a whole DVD). The only way to "compress" further is to use DVD Fab (or other similar programs) to reduce quality of the video thereby saving space. If you want to experiment, and your ISO file is on an NTFS filesystem drive, then you can use the NTFS compression feauture by using the Advanced button on the Properties dialog on your ISO file in Windows Explorer. The compression will take a while, and when it's done you can use the Properties dialog again to see how much space you saved if any. Files compressed using the NTFS filesystem compression can be used just like normal files, except for using more CPU power to read and write, and except for reading/writing performance. Writing performance will suffer greatly, while reading performance depends on compression ratio, speed of hard drive, speed of CPU, and how much CPU you're already using. In my opinion this type of compression is a waste of time for already compressed content such as MPEG video, MP3/WMA/OGG/APE/FLAC audio, JPEG pictures etc. with little or no gain in disk space.

![]() I fully agree. The whole reason for using lossy compressed formats (such as MPEG, MP3, VOB, etc) is that lossy compression yields a smaller file than non-lossy compressed formats (such as ZIP, RAR, etc). And in general, lossy or non-lossy, you won't gain much by adding another layer of compression to files that are already compressed.
