use a tool like ifoedit or pcgedit.

this is a technical dvd structure issue & has nothing to do with the merits or demerits of clearplay technology.

I tend to agree with the original OP that a program like dvdfab which claims to make exact backups should be usable for his purposes, especially if he's paid for the program!

so even though I do not in any way support clearplay, I do support his quest for a workable backup procedure, especially as it now seems that rival products re able to do the job successfully.

I am not skilled at deciphering .ifo files though so hopefully someone else will now lend a hand.
I'm glad that you understand the real issue. I did pay for DVDFab Platinum, and I do expect it to do what is advertised. I am willing to do a little bit of extra work if I have to, but I shouldn't have to buy yet another product to do a job that DVDFab is supposed to already be doing.

When looking at the IFO files last night, I did notice that DVDFab does change them, even in "Clone" mode. One of the IFO files I looked at actually had the movie title in plain text, but that seems to be uncommon and is not the determining factor. I'll look into the differences some more and see what else might be different besides the DVDFab branding.

Answer
ClearPlay FiltersTM are created specifically for individual titles. They are designed to recognize the DVD when it is inserted, and for this reason, ClearPlay will not work with back-up or copied DVDs.

Most ClearPlay players will play DVD-R and DVD-RW as well as DVD+R and DVD+RW discs, but you will not be able to use ClearPlay Filters with these discs."

So I guess they have delibarately made life difficult for you - yet another reason to boycott the product.

but look into how the set booktype feature works in fab - you may still be able to crack this if the player is using the booktype to check for an original DVD.
This is why I didn't bother to ask Clearplay technical support. I figured I'd have better luck here.

Re: How to make a backup copy that works with Clearplay?

Hi,

I guess Clearplay determine the disc by using some checksum, so for Clone the checksum is same, and Clearplay recognize it without problem, for other copy mode, the checksum is changed, so Clearplay cannot work.

it's not a problem of copy protection, it's just by design of Clearplay.

Best Regards,
Fengtao

Unfortunately, a Clone backup made by DVDFab does not work on all DVDs. It does seem to work with the Sony and WB discs I have tried, but not with any others. (It seems to work with discs that have a jacket_ps folder, but that may just be a coincidence. If a disc only has a video_ts folder it doesn't work.

So what are the chances of a new version of DVDFab being developed that works in 100% of cases like the competing product does?

I have now compared a working video_ts.IFO file with a non-working one. When comparing the 2 disc images, the video_ts.IFO file is the only one that is different. I can't see the difference using IFOEdit, but WinMerge says they are not exactly the same. The only difference I see in WinMerge seems to be white space, but since it's a binary file it's hard to tell what's going on.

I can provide the files for someone that might know what they're looking for.

Re: How to make a backup copy that works with Clearplay?

Infoman: in your post #7 you said that you use the cheapest DL media that you can find, well for one thing you will find is that some movies won't burn using cheap media plus down the road the cheap media that you are using will not play at all as they use very cheap dye, It has been recommended over and over in many forums in order to get good quality burns to use good media such as Verbatim DVD+R DL. but each to their own I guess, remember you get what you pay for. Also there is a blank media forum on here. Good Luck

Thanks for your concern. The particular issue I am having is not related to the media I am using, but is a software and/or copy protection issue. However I will keep the longevity aspect in mind - although I can always make another backup if the media eventually quits working.

I will look up the blank media forum, though - I've actually had some trouble with some Sony DVD-Rs lately (which I use for backups when I don't intend to use Clearplay or when the DVD doesn't require a DL disc for a clone backup).

Re: How to make a backup copy that works with Clearplay?

For what it's worth, I have found a Sony disc that DVDFab is unable to clone correctly, so what I said earlier about the jacket_p folder apparently was wrong. Also, a disc that only has a video_ts folder was cloned successfully with DVDFab, so that blows my theory in that area.

Re: How to make a backup copy that works with Clearplay?

Hi infoman,

New version of DVDFab will have an option "Copy Original IFO Files" in "Clone" mode, which will solve your problem in my option.

Please be patient, the new version is almost ready.

Best Regards,
Fengtao

Re: How to make a backup copy that works with Clearplay?

I see that you've added the functionality in the tutorial, specifically mentioning Clearplay. Do you have a beta version available that you'd like me to test with to make sure it works?

The feature is in the current beta (5.0.1.2). You can download it from the link in this post . I'm sure the developers would be interested in your feedback.

Re: How to make a backup copy that works with Clearplay?

Unfortunately, the new feature doesn't make any difference. It still works on some but not on others. You get the same results whether you copy the original .IFO files or not.

For example, I've noticed that Sony and WB discs work great, Disney (Enchantment, Underdog, National Treasure 2) discs do not.

Besides those, here are some specific examples:

Movies that have worked: Alvin & The Chipmunks, Across the Universe, I Am Legend, Robots, Juno

Movies that do not work: Spiderwick, 10,000 B.C. , AVP: Reqiuem

I could list more examples of both working and not working if needed, those are just the ones that came to mind.

Re: How to make a backup copy that works with Clearplay?

I also tried it with a DVD+R DL DVD, copy the orignial IFO - with There shall be blood using DVD FAB 5.03.00 and the Clearplay player does not recognize the Disk.

Any suggestions?
