DVDFab4120

Went out on a limb and purchased a legit version of dvdfab as i have heard very many good things about this software. Downloaded the version from the site following a c/card swipe and presto, I got the non-css enabled version. I then found a thread posted by fengtao which was offering the css-enabled version of dvdfab platinum - i thought great, so i downloaded this version and went to install it.

Three quarters through the installation i received an error message telling me that i had an application error for the pcouffin.sys file followed by a Trendmicro window pop-up telling me that "inst.exe" was blocked from making a suspect change to my op sys.

The software completed its installation and needless to say i cannot get it to back-up my dvd's as it does not reduce the size of the output files to 4.3GB instaed it copies the dvd at full size even though the little checkbox window at the bottom is set to reduce the output to fit a standard dvd.

I have done a complete system scan with trendmicro with system restore turned off and it did not find the "inst.exe" trojan or its aliases. I have done a 'clean' uninstall of the software as per stormjumper's post...twice in fact. Deleted the previously downloaded dvdfab software and downloaded everything again to re-install and i have still got the same problem!!! Obviously there is a file stored somewhere that i cannot find or get access to so as to delete and everything is getting reinfected???

I could really use some professional help on this one from all the GURUS out there!!! Can anyone shed some light on this problem??

thanks
Chris

Re: DVDFab4120

do a clean uninstall again then download and save the css version of dvdfab to a place on your computer. turn trendmicro off and then install the saved download this might work as from what you explain in your post is trendmicro is stopping the install somewhere. You can get the css version here: http://www.dvdfab.com/download.htm

Re: DVDFab4120

I think you should have trend micro allow dvd fab to install because it is blocking the vso software from installing correctly. Install with all trend micro stuff turned off.

Re: DVDFab4120

Hey guys,
thatks very much for your advice! I was able to install dvdfab by switching off trendmicro however, tried to back up a dvd again and even though the dvd5 checkbox was checked it still went ahead and did a 100% size copy.
What am i doing wrong and how do i get it to reduce the output so it fits a standard dvd?
thanks

Chris

If it was bigger would not have gotten a 100% reading

Re: DVDFab4120

The rip was 7.8GB in size even though dvdfab was set on full disc mode, dvd5 output and showed 52% compression (8135MB > 4300MB).
What am i doing wrong....???

sorry but according to what you said here is that it compressed your movie by 52% to fit onto the dvd5 disc( 8135mb>4300mb). That means it compressed it to a dvd5 size. check to make sure in common settings write mode that the dvd writable media size is between 4300 and 4472

Re: DVDFab4120

Hi GJ,
visually when dvdfab is open it shows that it is going to compress the dvd to 52% but when it goes through the process the end product is 7.8GB in size. I then insert blank dvd media to burn the the rip and it tells me (obviously) that the media inserted is not of a large enough capacity. Also i have checked the common settings as you have suggested and it is is set @ 4300.

Re: DVDFab4120

troy512,
once dvdfab loads and i go to main movie, split or customize it hangs for a few seconds, the preview video is pixelated, and then the software crashes / closes....!
What's the cause of this do you think?

Thanks for the lateral thinking!
Tried your idea of backing up main movie only and the output file was 5.72GB, inserted blank media and obviously failed to burn. I'm stumped!! What am i doing wrong?

You can't burn that much data on to a single layer disc which is why the burn failed.

Why DVDFab isn't doing what you want however is another matter.

You've already done a clean install so it must be some sort of configuration issue.

The crash with the preview could be the result of any one of a number of things but initially would make me suspect either a corrupt download or a problem with your graphics card drivers.

Did you re-download the program before you reinstalled?

Have you updated your drivers recently (possibly via Windows Update)?

Re: DVDFab4120

Wobler,
i re-downloaded the program for re-installation once a complete clean was carried out. Haven't updated drivers recently however auto update is on. I don't have any other graphics issues with nero, VLC, games etc. Do you suggest updating my drivers initially?
Another question is why dvdfab is not compressing the output file?

Check the 'Device Manager' first for conflicts or configurational issues and make sure you have the 'show hidden devices' option selected from the 'view menu'.

With regard to graphics drivers I'm always one for not rocking the boat unless you have to as graphics drivers in particular can be somewhat temperamental. In this instance it's probably worth a try but it's just a best guess based on suspicions though and may not resolve your problems.

In theory though it won't do any harm.

That I don't know but if the settings are okay and the size limits are correctly set, which from what you say seems to be the case, then it's likely to be a configurational issue peculiar to your system.

I know that doesn't help much but unfortunately we're almost in crystal ball territory here having exhausted all the obvious solutions.

The only time that DVDFab will not compress is when DVD9 has been selected at the bottom next to "Quality" on the main screen,..or..if you have the "DVD Writable Media (DVD-5) Size" setting (in common settings)over the limit that a DVD-5 will hold

Re: DVDFab4120

Checked out the Device Manager and everything seems to be running smoothly with no conflicts indicated.
The only other thing i can think of is that about 4 weeks ago i had to re-format my c drive and i downloaded the latest Microsoft updates...one of those updates was Windows Media Player 10 or 11 which i have heard (rumours only) that it has serious conflicts with dvdfab + AnyDVD which i have on my system although it is currently disabled due to conflict with dvdfab. I have recently rolled WMP back to an earlier version...perhaps the damage was already done?
Maybe I'm looking too hard for clues...?

Re: DVDFab4120

Thanks StormJumper, unfortunately i have checked and double checked the settings you mentioned with no postive result.
Visually it shows all the 'right' messagess eg:
Quality: 52% (8134MB > 4300MB)
however the output file is the same size as the original dvd and cannot be copied onto a dvd5!

Re: DVDFab4120

You stated "re-format my c drive"
do you mean you re-formated your hard drive or just the C drive itself
from what I'm thinking your C drive it self is not allowing you to do compression on it, the DVD file that was saved to the temp folder are you able to open it with DVD Shrink and use Shrink to compress and save it to your C drive

Re: DVDFab4120

Good call....I have one hard drive on my ASUS laptop which is partitioned - hence 'C' and 'D', I re-formatted 'C' only.
I deleted the DVD file which was sitting on my c drive from my earlier attempt. I will back-up the dvd again and try and compress the file with dvd shrink....! I will come back to you with an update!
many thanks
