| DVDFab wanting connection to DNS Server Hi guys, Newbie here & indeed new to the world of DVD backups. I bought DVDFab Platinum directly from DVDidle. I have only been playing with DVDfab express part so far, but it works perfectly overall & I am happy with it. However when I first installed it I was running Mcafee sercurity suite & that told me I had a virus when using the application, I read up on the problems with Mcafee so switched to Norton & that gives me no such warnings. My question is though.. I block most programs internet access through my firewall, but DVDFab refuses to complete & copy unless I allow it access to a dns server & have an active internet connection:-/ Does anyone know why this is ? Its a bit of a pain actually as I work away a lot & quite often dont have an internet connection. Any suggestions as to why this is, or whether you experience the same would be greatly appreciated. Cheers UK225 |

| Re: DVDFab wanting connection to DNS Server Hi UK225 and welcome. This is a function of the VSO burn engine (default burn app for fab) tryng to phone home. This past winter many experienced issues trying to finalize the discs...most related to firewall issues and phoning home. There was a thread this past winter...can't find it right now...I think posted as a "finalizing problem". Anyway, portmac (VSO) explained that the phoning home process only sent burn data (nothing personal) to the VSO data base in order to improve and fine-tune the product. Some firewalls got hung up. I use to have norton (never again, but that's another story) and I would have to click deny or allow access at finalization...but either function allowed to finalization to complete. I realize that this pc does not have internet access, but there must be a way to configure norton to ignore/deny...sorry but I can't remember exactly how my fw was configured. I know the freeware versions of AVG (anti-virus) and zonealarm (fw) don't have this problem. I used them for a while after dumping norton. I am now using panda (platinum)...recommended by Mack (bigmacnc) and couldn't be happier. It was cheap too! Hope this helps.

| Re: DVDFab wanting connection to DNS Server The last time I used a VSO product (CopytoDVD) I seem to recall an option for collecting burn information & sending it back to VSO. I naturally disabled this function & it might be that you can do the same. |

| Re: DVDFab wanting connection to DNS Server Thanks for all the help & advise so far guys I tried when i got home last night denying the app access to the internet & the burn would not complete & froze. I was using version 2.9.7.8 which according the revision history should have the fix in place. I have just downloaded the latest version, tried backing up Sahara, denied the app access to the internet & it completed the task without issue ![]() I used to always update all my software to the latest versions as they came out but the last year or so having had some major issues with certain apps I had been taking the stance if it aint broke dont fix it. This was a minor small issue really as it did do what it said on the tin if I allowed it internet access, but it was annoying I couldnt use it whilst away working when there was no internet. So many thanks to you all for your help. |
