DVDFAB SLOWER after RAM upgrade

I just upgraded the RAM in my laptop from 256MB to 1.2GB. (added a 1.0 gig ram module) I was hoping DVDFAB would work faster like everything else does now.

It now takes around 1:25 to anylize/Copy and about the same to burn.

It used to take :40 min or so. Anybody have any ideas?

What could possibly cause this?

Running DVDFAB Gold 3.0.9.8
Dell Inspiron 1300
Celeron M
Windows XP

Re: DVDFAB SLOWER after RAM upgrade

I would try upgrading to the new beta (3.1). One of your drives may have dropped out of DMA transfer mode. What read rate does DVDFab show during the "Task1 of 2" part of the process?

Re: DVDFAB SLOWER after RAM upgrade

I just upgraded to 3.1 Beta. I am getting 1.18-1.26MB/s during the task 1/2 process.

During the Burn process, I average about .8x

I checked my DMA setting on my IDE controller and it is set for "DMA if available"

But, under that it says:current transfer mode "PIO mode"

I tried DMA reset on DVDFAB settings page, but it doesn't work.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: DVDFAB SLOWER after RAM upgrade

Find any post from my good friend Maineman. He has links in the bottom (in his sig) that will let you read up on DMA issues and show you how to fix them. In fact, here is a link to one of his more informative and revealing posts:http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...postcount=1365

/EDIT/ Sorry, Tim, didn't see you coming.

Re: DVDFAB SLOWER after RAM upgrade

Tried the DMA reset link from above and rebooted. Now it says Ultra DMA mode 2. Tried DVDFAB again and now its up to 3.1-3.2 MB/s.

That seemed to work. Is 3.1MB/s a "normal" expected speed?

Thanks for the help!!

You're very welcome! Glad you have some improvement, but 3MB/s, while in the "normal" range is still a little slow if the original DVD is in good condition. Other speed robbers: background processes, reading HDD temp files and writing to burner through the same IDE controller, lack of large contiguous free space or fragmentation on the HDD where DVDFab writes the temp files. And some originals just read faster than others. If the drive you are using to read the originals is a DVD-ROM (read only) drive, it will not generally be as fast as a DVDR(W) drive for a given disc. My notebook with DVD-ROM reads at 4.5-5MB/s peak. My wife's notebook with a burner reads a good original at 7.5-8 MB/s.
