DVDfab rip slowing right down can be ok

Hi - I am new to all this DVDfab Platinum ripping thing but it would be good to mention somewhere that if the copying or ripping slows right down and the drive looks like it has stopped but the program seems to be still functioning this might be ok and it might just be reading through an error bit or something.

The reason I mention this is that not knowing this I thought it was the program was screwed several times on a couple of disks until it suddenly dawned on me that it might be doing this on purpose. (Did I mention I am not a smart man?)

So please help out us dummies and mention this is ok and we might have to be patient with some worn disks or something.

cheers!

I had a friend mention that he had the exact same problem. According to the changelog, if you update to the latest version that just came out, it should solve that problem. If it doesn't, post back to let the author know. I am sorry, according to my friend the rip completes, is that the same for you?

Re: DVDfab rip slowing right down can be ok

Ok so I am getting the hang of this now. Newbie things I have learnt include:

Some disks have "issues" and ripping and copying may be slower, (like real slow as in maybe hours but not usually just slow til it gets over the rough patch) That is the program trying to sort it out through the read errors or whatever.

Check to make sure your burner is on DMA. If you have too many errors the computer may even restart and revert to PIO. So for instance I was getting 12 mb/s and then it cracked it and afterwards it would not burn faster than about 3 mb/s It had set itself to PIO... Now I have set it back to DMA and away it flys again.

Hey there jaryd and welcome to the forum. You may also want to defragment your HDD and keep doing it on a regular basis ok. Also make sure your firmware is up to date on your burner. Also make sure in common setting you have checked to make sure DMA is on or something like that. I would still periodically go in and mke sure it is set right though. I myself have never had a disk take hours to do so I'd keep an eye on that. Little tips would also include, making sure you have as little apps. running in the background as possible and don't be online. Running apps. draws on your resources that can be used by Fab. Hope these suggestions help you out. ~ Mike

Re: DVDfab rip slowing right down can be ok

So when I set it to DMA and forced it to stay DMA it would rip really fast but it then could not handle any scratch or read error at all. The box would blue screen with a machine check exception or something a hardware error.

Then I found a post by Signals talking about experimenting with the I/O Control settings in Common Settings-->Read, changing from "Auto" to "SPTI" and "ASPI".

I set it to ASPI and now it seems to work. It will read fast but when it hits a read error it slows down and tries to deal with it and will eventually gives me a retry, abort, ignore, ignore all option which it did not do before. Then it speeds back up after it has dealt with the bit with errors.

I get a disc out that has the errors of the original but rips, burns and plays.

This is a bit weird in that I am running XP Pro SP2 with no ASPI layer installed so technically I would not have thought setting it to ASPI should or would work.

Next I might try setting it so SPTI just to see what happens.

Cheers.

Re: DVDfab rip slowing right down can be ok

SPTI worked but was very slow ripping for some reason. Setting it to ASPI seems to be the way to go for me.

Re: DVDfab rip slowing right down can be ok

SPTI seems to be the setting that gets me the machine check error.

ASPI seems to work because it is using the nero one.

So for me the fastest rip copy which could handle errors without a blue screen was achieved by setting dvdfab to aspi with ignore all errors and following the idea on this page here

http://www.nu2.nu/aspi/

to

Download wnaspi32.dll.
Copy wnaspi32.dll to the dvdfab directory.

Re: DVDfab rip slowing right down can be ok

Hi jaryd,

ASPI is not recommended on Windows 2000/XP/Vista.

Please try DVDFab 4.0.4.0 Beta to see the result:

Thanks!
