Re: DVDFab Platinum 3.1.0.5 Beta didn't finalize properly

More tests completed, results are varying a little.
One burn with the 2.1.0.5 burning DLL (included in the latest DVDFab) worked fine, then the next did not...but there is a bit more to it than that.

And at this stage I would like to point out that Win98 is evil and I don't like it.
It's about as unstable as Charles Manson on crack.......

Also the disc that I finalized with Imgburn was finalized in WinXP (disc was burnt in Win98), I did not attempt to do it in Win98.

I tried this as soon as you posted it. Great. I made a shortcut icon on my desktop to go right to it. I have had several coasters, maybe 4o or so out of over 600 burns. I went back and used it on the ones that would not load and out of 10 got 8 to play fine. Haven't had time to do the rest of them yet, but THANKS for the solution The more I learn about this software the better it gets. And I thought it was GREAT from the getgo.

Re: DVDFab Platinum 3.1.0.5 Beta didn't finalize properly

Glad I was able to help. Are most of your coasters due to the disc not finalizing?
As you can see I have a HP DVD drive and it is very slow to finalize. Freezes around 68% during the Finalizing stage of the burn. If I leave everything alone for 12 to 15 minutes when it freezes it will finally finish and eject the disc.
I was just wondering if I am the only one with this problem.

Hey Ron you are not alone with that problem. My HP640e did the same thing and the Litey I replaced it with sometimes takes about 20 seconds to finish and spitout the disc, then 5 or 6 seconds later the "gong" sounds and the Completed Succesfully box pops up. I've just learned to live with it. The ThinkPad I "borrowed" from my wife (while mine is back at HP again) doesn't do it at all. Go figure.

Hi Paul, I saw you lurking. Nice to hear from ya.
Thats why I went and got my new Sony burner. Real fast. I've found that the speed of the finalization seems to be cinnected the the burn speed. The slower the burn, the slower the finalization.

Same here! Can't say I've ever paid any attention to the time it takes to finalize in relation to the burn speed, only noticed that it sure hangs sometimes exactly the way you describe on your system. Ken from VSO is looking into this and hopefully may find something that will help us all. Mine was always worse (much worse) after burning a DL.

As far as I can tell, 3.1.1.0 Beta behaves the same as 3.1.0.5 Beta in regards to my problem with finalizing.

This time, I did notice that the "Finalizing..." message was shown for a few seconds, but it went much faster than usual, and dvdfab_vso_burn.log still shows that it spent 4 seconds finalizing the disc. Nero's CDSpeed still shows the disc status as open.

The somewhat good news is that to try to finalize this disc, I first tried ImgBurn. First Tools > Drive > Close > Track and then Tools > Drive > Close > Session, both of which resulted in a few seconds of DVD drive activity, and then Tools > Drive > Close > Disc, which didn't seem to have any effect. CDSpeed stills shows the disc status as open, but my DVD player is able to play this disc just fine, so at least it isn't a coaster for me..

I expect that for my next copy, unless DVDFab Platinum is updated again by then, I'll try using the Nero burning engine instead of the VSO burning engine.

I've never had the problem of DVDFab "freezing" or taking an unreasonable time in the finalizing stage, so I wouldn't know whether there's been any change with that problem.

Re: DVDFab Platinum 3.1.0.5 Beta didn't finalize properly

I wonder if this is related to how full the disk is. Anyone try reducing the number of tracks being written. In other words, setting the DVD-5 size to 4300 or less.

I always use 4472 but that doesn't mean some drives may have trouble writing to the outside tracks.

Re: DVDFab Platinum 3.1.0.5 Beta didn't finalize properly

Some rather minor updates to my problem of a DL DVD+R not being finalized properly.

First off, as I expected, 3.1.1.2 and 3.1.1.5 Beta behave the same as 3.1.0.5 Beta and 3.1.1.0 Beta in regards to this problem.

Following Portmac's advice more exactly, I was able to properly finalize a disc with ImgBurn by first finalizing the track and then finalizing the disc (skipping the step of finalizing the session).

I was rather surprised to find that a (SL) DVD+RW is finalized properly. I haven't tested any other types of media for this problem.

Something that does fix my problem (but may well cause other problems on some systems) is replacing the version 2.1.2.321 vso_hwe.dll in my DVDFab Platinum 3.1.1.5 Beta installation with the version 2.0.25.278 vso_hwe.dll from DVDFab Platinum 3.0.9.8, so I surmise that the problem has something to do with the way that vso_hwe.dll versions 2.1.0.311 and 2.1.2.321 interact with my system.

Re: DVDFab Platinum 3.1.0.5 Beta didn't finalize properly

With DVDFab Platinum 3.1.2.6, which still uses vso_hwe.dll 2.1.2.321, I still have the same problem when I use my NEC ND-3540A to burn a DL DVD+R disc.

However, I've added an Optiarc AD-7170A to my system, and with this drive as the writer, the discs are finalized with no problems.

How do the two drives compare on the bitsetting feature for +Rs?

They're both the same; bitsetting is available for DL DVD+R, but not for SL DVD+R or DVD+RW.

That's with the manufacturers' firmware. Modified firmware that allows bit-setting of DVD+RW and both SL and DL DVD+R is available; see the hardware forum.

The Optiarc AD7170A doesn't have ripguard, but the NEC ND-3540A does (with the stock firmware), but modified firmware to remove ripguard from the ND-3540A is also available.

That said, I'll caution anyone thinking of flashing with modified firmware that although it should work, badly modified firmware or anything going wrong while flashing (failure to follow instructions, power outage, MS Windows crash, conflict with other running software, etc.) could permanently damage the drive; there's no guarantees, and flashing (or trying to flash) with modified firmware voids any hardware warranty.

Other than that, the AD-7170A adds DVD-RAM capability (although I don't have any DVD-RAM discs), but still not Mt. Rainier capability.

Well, with more experience, it seems that I usually (but not always) have the same problem with the NEC ND-3540A, and I occasionally (but seldom) have the same problem with the Optiarc AD-7170A.

I've been keeping DVDFab Platinum updated; I'm currently using version 3.1.4.0.

Re: DVDFab Platinum 3.1.0.5 Beta didn't finalize properly

I recently started having the same, (I think), problem with the finalization process. I am using DVDFab v. 3.2.1.0 Platinum burning on Philips Lightscribe 16X DVD-R at 8X, Packet, DVD-5 4300 MB. I have two Lite-On DVDRWs, SATA, Model LH-20A1L LightScribe burners. The DVD writes no problem then says it is verifying, but finalize never completes. I've let it run for over 30 minutes. I started using the verify after write because I was having problems with DVDs not burning properly. I learned that my write speed was too high, so I lowered it to 8X. I also recently read that not all 16x or greater blanks are reliable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi slakerock and welcome to cdfreaks,

A few suggestions:
Change media to Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and yes, good move stepping down your burn speed to 8X.
Change Write Type from packet to SAO.
All is not lost with your unfinalized discs, you may be able to force finalization.

>Right click on the Fab icon
>Left click on Properties
>Left click on Find Target
>Left click on PcSetup.exe
>Left click on + in front of Patin-Couffin
>Left click once to highlight appropriate burner
(Unfinalized disc should be in this burner)
>Right click selected burner
>Navigate to bottom and click on Unfreeze/Finalize media

Hope this helps.

Re: DVDFab Platinum 3.1.0.5 Beta didn't finalize properly

Thanks maineman for the quick reply!

I already ran the Patin-Couffin program, (as I read about it in this thread before my initial post), and all it did was to tell me "Your drive seems to be reactive now." and it didn't finalize the disc, but that's okay because I still have the data in a folder and can re-burn it from there. I also downloaded ImgBurn to see what that could do for me, not much.

I changed the setting from packet writing to SAO, and turned off "verify disc after burning" Then I tried copying another disc and Voila! It worked, flawlessly.

The Taiyo Yuden 8X discs are on order from Meritline, although they are not lightscribe. I also purchased and received another burner today, a Philips 20X SATA model SPD2513BD, it was only $35 from NewEgg.

Thanks again. This is a great forum with tons of info and knowledgeable users.

Too bad about the failed finalizing on the older discs, but glad to hear all's well now.
Happy burning!

This problem is still the same in version 4.0.1.2; will it ever be fixed?

Adding new features is all very nice, but it seems to me that bug fixes should have the highest priority.
