DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

I just wanted to see if anyone has tried to get DVDfab running in Linux now that Ripit4Me is no longer being developed!

Ripit4Me ran very well with Wine on Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 and I have been working on DVDfab for a couple of weeks now with not much luck. The program will install and open, the DVD drive can not be detected.

Here is a guide I made for Ripit4Me and DVD Rebuilder on Ubuntu

I would really be interested in finding other people who want to make this work especially from Fentango!

Re: DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

Not a Linux user, but here is a suggestion: go to Common Settings-->Read and take I/O control out of AUTO mode with the drop down selector. Try SPTI first.

Re: DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

That does not work already tried different settings. There was a similar problem getting Ripit4Me going that was fixed by creating a "TempIFO" folder. I will keep working on this and have posted at Doom9 and the Ubuntu Forums.

Where are all the LInux people?

I have got this program to open a disc finally, then on the next try nothing. Unecrypted discs will open with no problems. To me it seems the problem isin the way it handles the IFO files and where it stores them! Some help from Fengtao would be a big help. I will keep working on this for now.

Re: DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

Hi,

DVDFab uses SPTI on Windows 2000/XP/Vista, and uses ASPI on Windows 98/Me, to access DVDs.

I don't know which OS is simulated in Wine, but you can try both SPTI and ASPI to see the result.

Best Regards,
Fengtao

Thanks for the details fengtao!
I've been working on this as well, on Ubuntu 7.04. I'm sure it can be done with the right tests/settings.

Re: DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

I am not sure about the decrypter in DVDFab but if it runs in kernel mode it will never work in Linux. In other words it becomes part of the operating system and is a driver. Again I am not sure that this is the case.

Re: DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

The commercial version of WINE is supposed to be able to run DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and some other decrypters. Hope this helps. I am building a machine to run SUSE Linux on and will probably uses Crossover as well.

I know for a fact it will not run AnyDVD, but that is a system driver.

Re: DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

I found this thread while searching for a ripper which was similar to DVD Decrypter, stumbled upon DVDFab HD Decrypter and decided to give it a go. Did a google search for anything relating to Ubuntu and DVDFab. I haven't had any trouble with it installing under Wine, or getting it to work.

I had the DVD in one of my DVD players already before I started DVDFab. Fab picked up that there was a disc in it right away. I've successfully ripped a disc, tried out the VOB files in VLC, and they look perfect. I then burned it with K3b. No pixelation. Don't know if it will work great each time, but so far it's been a successful experiment.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.04, Wine 0.9.39 (think I'll hold off on 0.9.40 for the moment...). It's all on an older computer (Dell Dimension 8200 P4 2.2 Ghz) and the DVD burner is an HP, dual layer.

Re: DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

My settings....it's nothing too special...Winecfg is set as Windows 2000...that's the only thing that I can think of which is, maybe unusual...? I had, last week, set up DVD Decrypter under Wine, which works wonderfully. The only major thing that I did, which I don't think would have any effect, but who knows. The DVD was in the drive when I turned on the computer...so when I got to my desktop I had the little icon telling me I had the DVD there...Then I went and found DVDFab, downloaded it, then went to my home folder, double clicked on it installed the program, it opened, recognized the DVD right away, and I clicked to start rip it.

Other than that, it's Ubuntu 7.04, Wine 0.9.39, the latest version of DVDFab HD Decrypter (not the platinum one)...I can't do much except rip the DVD, but that's okay, since I can then burn it with K3b....

It worked with one DVD, I haven't tried it with another DVD yet to see if it still works (could be a fluke I guess that it worked for me...)

Re: DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

Gave it a try myself and it works like sunnyflower says. Have to mount the disc first (I just open it in Konqueror) for Shrink and Fab to see it. Using SUSE 10.2 with Wine 0.9.24 set to Win2K and a SATA drive. No other special configurations made, mounting the disc adds the virtual drive (D:/media/DVD_TITLE for me) in Wine automatically and Shrink and Fab will find it.

Re: DVDfab HDDecrypter in Linux

Yep, install Wine with apt-get or Synaptic or whatever it's called these days. A burning app should be there already (K3b or GnomeBaker)? Or you can get the trial from nero.com (.deb package, not .rpm). If you set file associations so all .exe files will open with wine (located in /usr/bin), it'll be easy to install Fab onto your virtual Windows C:\ drive in the (hidden) .wine folder and run it from there.

Oops, that probably didn't make much sense to a Linux-freshman. Have to start somewhere

P.S. Don't know if VMware will like all of this... you'll have to try (Dee?).

It's not hard, really. 5 years ago maybe, but not now. Most things just work. Just google whenever you're stuck.

No love here: Green pixelation throughout.
Wine 0.9.40
Ubuntu 7.04
DVD Fab HD Decrypter 3.1.4.0 set to Windows 2000 in winecfg

Is there any DLLs that need to be specified? I have dvd decrypter, dvdshrink & ri4m functioning fine...
