DVD to Mobile Very Slow

I used DVDfab Platinum 30 day trial to convert a DVD to iPod Touch. It made the transfer in about 45 minutes, which my brother told me was typical. So, I bought DVDfab Platinum. Now it's taking twice a long as the length of a movie to convert it. So, the 90 minute movie that I did the first time that took 45 minutes is taking 180 minutes! This is typical of all conversions. What's the problem?

Thanks.

Re: DVD to Mobile Very Slow

I've tried both, 1 pass. I've also tried other mobiles and they all come up the same. I transfered The Lake House for my wife's iTouch this evening, it's a 98 minute movie and it took 153 minutes to convert it. Quite unacceptable.

Thanks.

Yes, I've checked/reset the DMA.

What kind of time are other people getting?

Thanks.

Re: DVD to Mobile Very Slow

I am copying dvd to xbox 360. It is taking 7 hours. I have checked dma. On my secondary IDE channel, Device 0, transfer mode is DMA IF AVAILABLE, Current transfer mode is ULTRA DMA MODE 4. Device 1 , transfer mode is DMA IF AVALIABLE, Current mode is PIO MODE. I cant seem to change it to DMA. Does anyone know how i can force it to DMA? Do some harddrives not allow DMA?

Oh by the way I am doing one pass.

Re: DVD to Mobile Very Slow

Krakrjaks,

Check your BIOS setting at startup and see what your computer is detecting the drive as. It should be set to DMA ON in the BIOS. If it isn't, windows won't detect it as a DMA drive.

By the way, I've given up trying to get it to go any faster. I've found the smaller the final file, the faster it goes. But, it still takes 1.5 - 2.5 hours.

Good luck.

Very nice input about the BIOS

Re: DVD to Mobile Very Slow

I'm getting some pretty good performance from my new system but I've only been using the DVD to xbox360 so far after the upgrade.

Thatdood,

Wow, that's pretty fast. At first I thought my system was the problem, but I don't understand how I could convert a movie in 45 minutes, then when redoing it, it took 2.5 hrs.

It looks like you have a super system. If I read your message you have a quad core CPU.

Have you tried converting to an iPod mp4 file? I'd be interested to know how it goes on your system.

Have you tried the Reset DMA button in DVDFab Common Settings?

Re: DVD to Mobile Very Slow

I find that this function is very much hardware (CPU) Dependant. I have a dual core Intel CPU and it's at 99% utilization during the conversions. Yet, using my setup the conversion time is not that bad. Perhaps an hour or two for a full length disc.

Re: DVD to Mobile Very Slow

Hi IP
What is your conversion rate (fps)? For me, H.264 is the only mode that really makes the CPU work. Xvid and the others seem to be limited more by read speed (or something else). Did you see the post by the Quad Core owner who was getting conversion rates of 171 frames per second (#10 above)?! Wow, time for a new build.

Look under "Integrated Peripherals", then choose "IDE Devices Configuration". Then follow directions on screen. Also check "Windows Device Manager" when you reboot and Windows loads. You will find this in the Control Panel, System, Hardware.

Wow, 171 fps is crazy. I did a few test conversions last night with the latest build and I did see some differences base on the choice -- H.264 was slower but I was using a larger image size at the time. I think it was cranking along at 17 - 20 fps, but I'm not sure about that. I can look again this evening.

Using xvid.mp3 with at small video size I was able to process the entire U2 go HOME DVD (19 songs/chapters) in about 55 minutes. It would have taken longer if I had selected a larger video size-- but I was just trying to rip the MP3's out to play in my portable.

Re: DVD to Mobile Very Slow

Mine takes about 1/2 the time of whatever I am burning when burning to Mpeg4. So an hour and a half movie takes about 45min. It rips at around 59 Fps. I am using a Dell inspiron 1520 with a Pentium dual core. Hope that helps.

This is about what I get too with xvid, slightly slower with H.264. Dealing with subtitles slows it down a little too. DVDFab is still faster than other file conversion stuff I have tried and the output plays and looks better on my Archos.

Re: DVD to Mobile Very Slow

As a general rule, I find it far quicker for conversions if I rip the DVD to an ISO on the hard drive first, then use that ISO as the source for mobile conversions.....

Re: DVD to Mobile Very Slow

Sorry guys I haven't had time to do anymore testing outside of the xbox360 conversion.

I've been busy trying to find AVCHD video editing software for the new Sony Camcorder that I purchased recently. The problem is nobody is taking advantage of 64bit platforms. The software runs on 64bit platforms but in 32bit mode.

I wonder when DVD Fab will be written for true 64bit support as well. Once this happens my system should see a big performance increase.
