DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

I'm trying to pull a copy of RV to play on my Archos AV320. I beleive I am doing everything right, but the .avi output is missing the first half of the movie - it starts from Chapter 17 instead of Ch 1. Yes, I havemade sure that the program is set to copy from Ch1 to Ch29. Have tried several times with different bit rates, have rebooted, and have even tried making a copy of the DVD to Hard Drive before attempting .avi generation with very consistent results - Ch17-Ch29 only. I've got plenty of hard drive space free (300GB), plenty of RAM (1.5GB). Program is not crashing -- it says it completes successfully.

Anyone got a clue - I'm all guessed out!

THANKS

Re: DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

What title is "RV"? As a general suggestion, make sure the title selected in the left hand window has the correct running time for the entire movie. This is not a 2-sided disc, is it?

Re: DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

What title is RV? "RV" the movie with Robin Williams.

Yes, Title 2 is selected with the running time of 1:38 and change. The output file is 42:40.

The "log" displayed while the program is running indicates that Title 2 is being copied - chapters 1-29, 1:38. When it is done, it says that it took about 1/2 the expected time.

Re: DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

What mode did you use when attempting the DVD-->DVD copy? If you haven't, try Customize/No Menus and select the same title. I don't have this disc, so you'll have to help me along here. What is the running time for title 1?

Re: DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

Thanks Signal...
Here's the full run-down:
DVD-FabDecrypt Plat v3.1.1.6

There is no title 1. Title two is 1:38:30

Here's what I am doing: Launch program, select DVD to Mobile and select PVP as the device. I select the source as the DVD drive with the RV disc. The program reads the disk and Shows me the "task List" with:
device = pvp
information: RV: Title(2), Playtime(01:38:30)
profile: dvd.default (which is set to the Archos AV320

If I click the "configure" button, I see the conversion config screen showing the PVP device. Video format is MPEG4 with fixed bitrate, fast encoding, 900kbps and framerae same as source. Audo format is mp3, 128kbps, 100% volume. Frame reso set to 320x180. Subpicture = direct render to video.

I'm not sure where the setting you mentioned can be found. I have wandered through all the main program set-up menues and do not see that option.

I'm very confused. I almost get the feeling that the chapters are not being converted in order from 1 to 29, but start at 17 to 29, then 1 to 16. The convert is starting at 17, getting to 29 and thinking it is done.

I also tried copying the DVD "Click" (Adam Sandler) and only ended up the the tail credits in the .avi output.

Either I am doing something seriously wrong here, am just plain stupid, or have missed some important set-up step.

The screenshot didn't come through--may have been too large for the forum. The setup looks fine. DVDFab occasionally has trouble like this on some MPEG-4 conversions. The function I mentioned (Customize/No Menus) is a DVD to DVD mode. Since the MPEG-4s are sometimes problematic, it's better to test Fab's functionality and the nature of your original DVD in the MPEG-2 modes, which almost never have a problem like this barring a really unusual DVD structure (e.g. AVP or other titles that have multimedia commentaries). The Customize/No Menus mode doesn't depend on the original's IFO files and makes new and simpler ones based on the titlesets selected for copying. Main Movie Only works this way too but gives you fewer options for processing, so both of these MPEG-2 modes are good to use for testing if there is a possibility the disc has an unusual file structure either due to Sony-like structure protection or strange features (like the commentaries). If DVDFab will copy the entire movie in either of these modes, you can then use the decrypted files as the Source for your MPEG-4 conversion (select the folder icon in the Target area to write to the HDD). A more informative screen shot would be with the disc opened with DVDFab in Customize mode.

/EDIT/ My daughter says she thinks she has RV and will bring it over when she comes later today, so no screen shots needed.

Re: DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

Arrrghhh! Nothing is working! I'm trying a couple of other disks to see if I can get one of them to work properly. I've tried using the MainMovie mode and the Customize mode to rip the movies and then the DVD->Mobile to .avi them. Not getting anywhere. I'm beginning to think it would be faster to just play the disk and record in real-time on the Archos.

As soon as this one finishes, I'll grab the screenshot you suggest (shrink it) and send it.

Thanks again for all the help. Maybe I should send you the $50 instead of DVD Fab!

Re: DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

Sorry you're having trouble, Chief. Do you have a PC player that will let you play the DVD to DVD copies you made using Customize/No Menus (WinDVD,VLC, PowerDVD etc)? Have you checked to see if the complete movie was copied? I won't have the RV disc until tomorrow. Sorry. Send Fengtao the money, not me! Do you work in the broadcast industry (your forum name a common title there)?

Re: DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

Ting/Chief
Sorry to be so long getting back to you. I did the following with RV R1 Widescreen Edition:
First, copied to HDD with Customize/No Menus: perfect copy of full movie.
Second, still with original DVD disc as source, converted to AVI+MP3 with Archos 320 default profile, direct render to video subpix: copied full movie, opening logo to end credits, file size 668 MB. Slight A/V sync problem, audio trails video approx. 2-300 ms. Barely noticeable, even at large screen size. This was played back with VLC, screen shot of stream info is below.
Third: Copied again, same as above except no subpicture stream, same result, output file size not identical but very close. I can also do Extract to File if needed, but didn't want to take the time before posting this given the results.
Again, sorry this took so long. Ting, I have zipped the IFOs if you want them, let me know. Thanks again for your help. (This was all done with 3.1.2.0 beta)

Re: DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

Eureka!

I took a completely different approach to the problem this afternoon - the old uninstall/reinstall trick. Amazingly, it is working now the way I would have expected (and as signals indicates). Why didn't I think of that sooner?

I have no idea what might have happened during the install process but something apparently went a little weird. I wonder if it was the old "freeware" version getting in the way (I uninstalled that one as well). Unless you guys think it is worth trying to figure out if it was a one-time event or something repeatable, I'll just be happy it is working and go on with getting a bunch of stuff transcribed to my portable so I've got something to help keep my sanity before I leave for a month in Japan.

Thanks for all your efforts and the tips. Let me know if you want me to run some post mortums to see if there is a conflict with something on my machine.

Re: DVD to Mobile only copies part of movie

Glad you got it going. Ting I suspect has plenty to do and I think this problem was a corrupted file or driver somewhere, since no one else has reported it. Have a safe trip .
