Leave it. The higher the number the better.

Re: which dma mode is the best

It all depends on the hardware as windows will assign the correct DMA mode, most of the time DMA 2 was for the older CD Roms and DVD Roms as Bob said the higher the better

Just curious to know if you are using a 80-conductor Ultra DMA IDE/ATA interface cable for your drives?

You should be able to get Ultra Dma Mode 6 for your hard drives, and Ultra Dma Mode 4 for your DvD burner(s)

Re: which dma mode is the best

If it's working ok for you then I wouldn't worry about it, and nothing wrong with your burners being in ultra DMA mode 5

Burners don't do Ultra DMA Mode 5, it's 4 or 2. Hard drives do 5.

Just was curious, if he is having no issues then by all means leave it as is.

Re: which dma mode is the best

I know HD's use 5 and burners use 4 or 2 but the OP said his burner was in 5 but if it was working leave it alone also you stated that HD's use 6 maybe a typo ?

Re: which dma mode is the best

No it's not a typo, I have three hard drives running Ultra DMA Mode 6 and three burners running Ultra DMA Mode 4.

I guess if you take riggs as being a burner.

Re: which dma mode is the best

Stand corrected then, was curious as my WD hard drive only runs in ultra dma mode 5 and the burners in 4

Re: which dma mode is the best

You most likely have IDE ATA-100, you need IDE ATA-133.

I am not saying that UDMA6 is not an option, but my Raptor runs in UDMA5 and my odds run in either UDMA 2 or 4, it depends on the firmware.
