Try using Verbatim brand +R DL's. Ridata are no good.

Right on Bob about the media type Also don't try to burn faster than the media is rated, may take a little longer but I use 2.4X for dl media with NO problems

You'll hear this over and over if you're experiencing burn issues with DL media. Verbatim +R DL is the only consistently recommended DL media.
Also, Jimbo is spot on re: the burn speed.

If you need more feedback/specific advice, please post a burn log.

You have no layer break info. What did you use to make the file? What format is it?

Re: copy a dvd into a DVD9 with DVDfab platinum

I still think the problem is your media.
The atapi code = write error, but the burn process never actually started so your media is still usable, as you already know.
Your firmware does support this media...it can't set a layer break.

Looks like you tried to write to the external LG burner.
Recommend that you take a look at updating your firmware for this drive.
In the meantime, try to burn this media with your internal LG.
Also, switch to verbatim +R DL.

I'll take a look for the firmware.

[Edit]
Hi rolling, didn't see you...

Re: copy a dvd into a DVD9 with DVDfab platinum

Hi again,

Not having any luck so far with firmware for your GSA-5120D.
LG's site is terrible, couldn't find the drive on Liggy and Dee's site and I can't seem to bring up the Dangerous Brothers at all.

Anyone know what happened to Vlad and Igor or where they are...

Re: copy a dvd into a DVD9 with DVDfab platinum

yeah get new dl disc, there is also a problem with the layer break issue going on here. looks like you are only using dvdfab? are you using clone or full disk? http://gb.lgservice.com/ has newer 102 firmware for the GSA-H20N but same a104 firmware for the GSA-5120D. at the lg site go to device drivers and do a search for GSA-H20N. may try doing full disc to iso then burn with imgburn using the same drive and same disc and let us know how it goes.

troy

edit//i have noticed that these two sites are down from time to time

My apologies...
The comment above ^^^, in post #7 should have read,

"...Your firmware does NOT support this media...it can't set a layer break..."

Hope this makes more sense.
Sorry for not proof reading.

his drive does support dl dvd=+r according to the log the media type is supported, also according to the owners manual from the lg site. i guess it could not be supported by the firmware. however the update for the a104 firmware states.

Re: copy a dvd into a DVD9 with DVDfab platinum

Yeah, I guess I wasn't clear...
I don't think the OP's current firmware supports RITEK-S04-42, did not mean to imply that his drive and firmware don't support DL's at all.
This drive and firmware is pretty old and don't mean to bash LG's... I don't have an LG, but I know they make some really decent burners and a lot of folks love 'em.
Still, the LG site stinks.

Anyway, it's tough to track this down.

Like I said, try to burn this media with the GSA-H20N and switch to the verbs...

I know that on the plextor site, besides firmware updates,
they also show which media the burner works best with.

does his burner site have that info?

note:
I thought just about everyone who burned DL used Verbatim disks..

It's not clear from your post, maybe you already tried to burn the Riteks in the GSA-H2ON.
In any case, pick up some verbatim +R DL media and try this media.

I have 2 LG burners (GSA-4083N internal (came in notebook), GSA-E60L USB external). The internal is a good reader but not the best burner. The firmware does not have a burn strategy for the newest (8X) Verbatim DLs and only offers 2.4X with them and does not support bitsetting. The external E60L is much better at burning and has more up-to-date firmware that supports bitsetting and high speed burns on the newer (orange label) Verbatim DLs. Its internal controller that interfaces the drive to USB sometimes gets confused and requires a hard (power off) reset. The 6X DL burns from this drive play on everything I own without a glitch. I found a LiteOn external on sale cheap last week and bought it just to have another one.

It's not that LG's are crap. It's just your drives firmware doesn't support those discs. Older drives and newer media problems.

I use my Plextor 760A,Lite-On LH-20A1P,Lite-On DH-20A4P, and Samsung SH-S203B here lately for DL Verbatims. All of these drives are using the most current firmware except for the Plex. All of these drives are hooked up internally. Not sure what others are using.

Re: copy a dvd into a DVD9 with DVDfab platinum

There are a lot of good drives out there.
Like rolling, I use a Samsung SH-S203B, also a Liteon LH 20A1S and two Benq 1655's. The Benqs are a bit behind with firmware BCDB. The only hitch is that the older firmware won't support anything faster than 2.4X for DLs, but the newer firmware is crappy for DL burning.

Frankly, I could care less if my DL's burn at 2.4 or 4X. I still have a bunch of MKM 001's (rated at 2.4X,4X) from last Christmas...got 'em for $10.99/10pk, free shipping and no tax...it was a sweet deal so I bought a truckload...

Re: copy a dvd into a DVD9 with DVDfab platinum

http://club.cdfreaks.com/f91/lg-gsa-...rdings-113351/

here is a thread where another member was having trouble with burning DL verbatim with a LG-5120D. the fix was found in post number 4 and post number 6. dvd decrypter is no longer updated to handle copy protections so sticking with dvdfab is still a good choice. use dvdfab for the ripping to iso and use imgburn. (imgburn is the updated burner from dvd decrypter)
