Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

Hi,

I have an LG GBW-H10N Blu-Ray writer and use it regularly to copy my Blu-rays to a usb drive for watching later (in Vista).

My last rip that worked with this drive was about a month ago and i have been trying over the last few days without any luck.

There had been 2 changes on the PC:

1) Firmware updated from GL05 > GL06
2) DVDFAB HD Decrypter 3.2 installed (upgraded from 3.1.x)

Having reinstalled 3.1.x the rip still wouldnt work, even Blu-Rays i backed up fine before.

I know the program is fine because my HD-DVD drive is still ripping its discs fine.

What happens is as follows:

Insert BD, PowerDVD opens and auto-plays fine (Proves the drive/disc are working). I close this and open DVDFab and it tries to scan the drive as normal but this flicks off after about a second and the drive/movie doesnt appear in the dropdown for choose source.

To me it looks like LG have somehow locked out this drive from ripping with the latest firmware, anyone have any other ideas?

I don't think this has been resolved yet. But if you keep looking at this thread, I will keep it updated.

As the info stated you need to update the FW on your burner
(Consumers can easily continue to enjoy content that is protected by the AACS technology by downloading the latest version of their HD DVD and Blu-ray software players, thereby refreshing the encryption keys associated with those players. Consumers are advised to check with the manufacturer of their AACS-enabled Blu-ray or HD DVD PC-based player to make sure you have installed the latest version.

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

I have the latest firmware, there is no GL07. And I have the latest powerDVD which works fine with it.

The only thing not working is ripping with DVDFab. (which i also have the latest version of).

Re: DVDFab 3.2.0.6 Beta

Hi GWolfman,

For latest Blu-ray disc, your drive is revoked so that DVDFab cannot work for Blu-ray anymore, and there is no fix in near future.

Best Regards,
Fengtao

this is very confusing -

if his drive now plays blu-ray DVDs properly when used with powerdvd , but not when used with DVDfab to rip the same DVd, then surely it's DVDfab's blu ray keys that are revoked & not the drive keys???

otherwise, you are implying that if he installed a new drive or connected a USB drive , then FAB would be able to rip blu-ray OK from a new drive on that same PC?

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

Device keys and media keys are still there, with a major change, in the first steps of content decryption, a player has to find its specific key in a big ternary tree of keys, where each leaf corresponds to the key of a given device (brand and model). By denying a drive to find its key in the tree, Blu-ray and HD-DVD can easily revoke a single given device. If for instance a given player is cracked and its keys are published, the licensing authority will send new keys and navigation information to disc manufacturers. As a result, all discs pressed after the player has been cracked will refuse to play on this specific drive, but will play perfectly on all other (including older) devices.

Just a FYI for everyone, moving back to the GL05 firmware did not fix this.

I get that, but thought he'd said that he could still play the DVd on that drive with powerdvd, yet could not rip it. ( hopefully he'll confirm or correct this).
& If that's the case then the above "explanation" does not work, because it implies that his DVD should NOT play at all in that drive anymore???

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

HI Cybmole, I can confirm that the drive plays movies fine in PowerDVD 7.3 and i can browse the Blu-Ray folders in Windows explorer.

Have tried Blu-Rays from Europe and from the US and all play fine. Its just not ripping for me.

thanks - so the plot thickens - the revoked key must be one that the drive shares with DVDFAB but not with other software ???

and a related dumb ? question that comes to mind is :

what happens if he now swaps that drive for a replacement which is the exact same make, same model, same fimware. ( which he could maybe do if it is still under guarantee )
would the replacement work or not ? i.e. does the technology block a specific individual drive or an entire product line ?

I guess we can answer that if we can find someone who has the same DVD & the same make of drive & get then to try ripping it?

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

Its a very good question regarding the swap. If i bought from a local store then i would try but it was on the net and thats far too complicated to do.

As for the key sharing. In my head what has happened is the firmware update must be able to update the AACS/HDCP parts of the hardware with new keys. The powerDVD version i have must have already been updated in anticipation and now they "sync" up well where as DVD FAB cant use the new keys (yet).

I also assume that LG can choose to include these updates in a firmware or not, and thats why flashing to GL05 doesnt fix my problem...it doesnt have the old keys in there to flash, its just a true firmware flash.

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

As Tom would say :"the battle continues" I can see it now that this problem will get worse as time goes on with them changing the keys from time to time as they stated in the AACS home page

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

Just the usual inconvenience for the normal consumer i guess.

I could download a blu-ray rip in whatever quality i want and keep it on the drive, play it no probs.

But having spend loads on a drive and purchase of many movies i have to play them from the media.

Crazyness.

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

For more information people can go to search (advanced) key word and type in AACS Blu-Ray HD and search all forums as there are a few post on this subject even some on how to get around it, for the time being anyway

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

hi all, bit of an update.

I had stopped using AnyDVD HD a few months back when i discovered DVDFab was much nicer to use. Today i tried AnyDVD HD Ripper 6.1.8.4 (latest version) just out of chance and found that it still works with the Blu-Ray drive. Currently its ripping away quite happily and DVDFab still wont

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

Hi, After reading you posts here i for one don't think it is revoked keys that is causing trouble for the players, As i Bought a LG Player and it would not work right out of the box, DVDFab HD will not Recognize my player, I have no Problem with AnyDVD HD. So why would ANYDVD work and DVDFab not?. It is something with the software that will not Recognize my Drive.

I'm only an interested bystander in this issue, but I beleive it its DVDfab's processing key that's been revoked, not anyone's drive key.

The only "write to" area which a dirve has is its firmware, so that's the only place that "key revoking" data could be placed, & if it is was put there, then a reflash of firmware would reset it.

the list of revoked keys is on each newly pressed hd dvd that's how it reached your system, but the serial number and key of your drive cannot be known in advance to the makers of each new HD dvd disc ?

the proof will be in whether your PC Dvd player software can still play the disc, even though dvdfab can't process it

I believe that's correct... the keys DVDFab is using have been revoked. I don't think that's the sort of thing the author will be willing to confirm however.

If that is true would a new Updated version Be revoked also?. As for Playing movies, yes i can play all bluRay and HDdvd, on a Disk or Ripped. I did Flash a FW update to my LG Unit with no luck reading a Disk after the flash Nor Before.
So i would say that would rule out the Rom Drive from being the problem. As if one is able to use a Different Software without issue that would support that claim.
Would the following statement be the Culprit? Includes a UDF 2.5 file ripper, no need to install 3rd party UDF 2.5 file system under Windows XP. Used in AnyDVD HD.

Re: Copy Blu-Ray > Hard Drive no longer works LG drive

ideally we need the program authors to confirm, but my guess is that whatever key they got hold of in order to produce a program that could rip HD / blu ray , that key is now known to be compormised and so has been revoked.
And that earlier postings by the authors saving "drive has been revoked" are misleading.
the only way that an updated version of the program could work woudl be if they got hold of a different key, but then it would only be a mtter of time before that one was revoked also.
Hence recent statements from the authors that no commercial ripping solution is viable for now.

I plan to just stay with regular dvds until copy & key protection becomes less onerous. From other background reading, I'm getting that unless you have a 40 inch or larger screen, or eagle eyesight, you won't see the difference anyhow. ( & my eyesight is crap! ), and for folks who want to rip & convert to watch on tiny 3 inch handheld screens, the whole HD / blu ray thing is pointless.
