Re: Cleaning a slightly scratched DVD

Hi mommy,

First off, clean it...won't help the scratches, but it may be all you have to do.
Microfiber cloth (no scratches), isopropyl alcohol...windex...nothing that will degrade plastics...no solvents like acetone.
Wipe like spokes on a wheel, not in a circular fashion.

If you still have trouble, say with scratches, I like Brasso myself. Don't glob it on.
The whole idea is that it's a mild abrasive (same idea with toothpaste, etc.,) and will work like a jeweler's rouge.

Hope this helps and good luck...

Re: Cleaning a slightly scratched DVD

If it is only lightly scratched, the first thing I try is the Pledge method. Spray on a little Pledge wax and buff gently in to out (not round and round the disk). It works sometimes, but less than 50% of the time.

After that try a mild abrasive and try to polish it out....I use an extremely fine abrasive in a wax base meant for auto clear coats. I've also heard of people using Brasso.

Is it skipping while playing, or are you trying to make a backup?

Re: Cleaning a slightly scratched DVD

Yeah, Kerry makes some good points. I haven't tried the pledge method, but heard it works pretty well...same with a good quality auto wax.
Like I said, the whole idea is to mimic a jeweler's rouge to "dampen" or reduce the scratch so that the laser can focus accurately

What brand/model of drives have you tried? Some drives read better than others.

LG's are not known for reading but are great burners. I have 2 LG's. H42N PATA and a H62L SATA.

...afraid so. As far as watchable flicks go there's really good ones and not so good ones, but as long as they're entertaining, I'm ok with 'em.

My son (21) and I watched this one...just the "boys" lookin' to be entertained and trust me, it usually doesn't take much......even he was holding his nose...
Save yourself from this one...

Re: Cleaning a slightly scratched DVD

you can get CD/dvd cleaning kits cheap on ebay.
just pop the disc in the gadget, spray it with supplied stuff, close the lid & turn the handle a few times. seems to work well - I use one for renovating used comuter game discs.

You can buy CD/DVD repair fluid here in the UK and I presume something similar is available in Canada.

It fills the scratches with a polymer solution which when it dries has the same optical properties as the original plastic of the disc.

It's very effective and less destructive than other methods although I see you've already tried most of those.

Re: Cleaning a slightly scratched DVD

Or just go to Best Buy or Walmart and buy a DVD cleaning kit for $20 which removes scratches
