Re: CDFreaks presents: The DVDFAB Platinum 3 Review

Very nice review, Arachne!

Does DVDFab rip the files from DVD to harddisk before starting the transcoding process, or are the files transcoded directly from DVD to target?

If the files are ripped to harddisk, is there an option to choose where those files are placed?

Re: CDFreaks presents: The DVDFAB Platinum 3 Review

Yeah, they're temporarily stored in a temp folder on your HDD, then burned to DVD.

There is an option in Common Settings to change the location of that temp folder, I've already done it myself.

It's on the first screen you're presented with on clicking "Common Settings" - just change the path(s) to wherever you like.

Thanks Alan

Re: CDFreaks presents: The DVDFAB Platinum 3 Review

@DrageMester
There is also a Customize Mode. It is a work in progress and I tried the pre beta release and was hooked on it. There are some bugs, but look at all the features. Fengtao released over 10 betas before first final release and now up to 3.0.4.0. Download a free full working copy, and you sound like a person who has knowledge to give feedback in the Feature Request thread.

Re: CDFreaks presents: The DVDFAB Platinum 3 Review

Nicely done, but you list as a "con" the inability to output to .iso files.
While this may be true for the modes that allow manipulation of the content (Main Movie and Customize), the "Clone" mode produces an .iso file output when the hard drive is selected as the target.

Re: CDFreaks presents: The DVDFAB Platinum 3 Review

Great review!!!! One question. Have Kerio Personal Firewall, it tells me that DVDFab 3 Platinum tries to communicate with two web sites, sorry I did not not log the addresses, I denied it access and it works fine. It also keeps a complete log of all backups made which I delete with CCleaner. I know that one site is most probably updates. As I am 58 years old and this is my first computer, loving it by the way, any ideas?

The VSO burning engine that comes with DVDFab calls home to update VSO's database of burn success/failures, media types, burners used etc. Totally anonymous the last time I looked at the report several versions ago. The other may be DVDFab automatically checking for new versions which you can disable in "Common Settings".

thats funny, if i dont have any media inserted and click start nothing happens, do you have the latest version, DVDFab Platinum 3.0.9.8?

as i am sure you have tried different source disk even ones which have previously worked, and have tried to play other dvd's on your drive to verify that it IS still reading, lets start here, this is some good advice by stormjumper.

Re: CDFreaks presents: The DVDFAB Platinum 3 Review

I've used DVDFab but never DVDFab Platinum. I have a couple of questions that are not mentioned in the review.

What I like about using DVD Shrink is the ability to edit frame by frame, and being able to listen to the existing audio options to be able to choose which ones are wanted.

Can DVDFab Platinum do this?

Re: CDFreaks presents: The DVDFAB Platinum 3 Review

You can only edit by chapters and not individual frames. It might be something wrong with my setup - but I can only get preview image and no presound in the preview window.

If you're comparing applications then this is not strictly true for DVD Shrink - you can set edit points at the group-of-pictures level; approx 15 frames for PAL which equals about half a second.

Preview in DVDFab does not play audio and plays in fast forward. This is the normal condition. It does track the chapter it is playing in realtime just above the video window. Finer edit control has been mentioned frequently in the Features Request thread.
