was the successful dvd decrypter rip done using this drive? looks like from your logs that you are able to rip using dvdfab but the burn fails. the errors says to check the cables. uninstall your ide channel in device manager, power down your computer, disconnect the drive and reconnect making sure the cable is attached correctly. when windows boots up you will be prompted to restart again.

Yes, I ripped it using this drive to my hard drive using DVD Decrypter (not the decrypter from DVDFab) it's another decrypter program, then I used Shrink to shrink it down, then deleted the DVD Decrypter folder's contents (I try to keep what I don't need cleared away), leaving my Shrink folder intact to work from.
Check cables? Hmmmm.....I am disabled, but managed to get down on the floor and checked all connections, if that's what you are referring to? The drive I am using is built into my tower so I cannot disconnect the drive itself, so if there is something else, I'm not familiar as to what should I do next?

you are burning with sao, so dont worry about it.

Yes, I put the setting to sao, and VSO Burning Engine is marked..

yes it is.

Thank goodness!

change the burn speed to 8x or 12x

I've tried both speeds you have suggested, I still cannot manage to copy my complete movie from my hard drive.I've even tried different types of discs and by different makers. Gosh...this has been an expensive learning experience to say the least.

have you tried using this drive?

That drive when I try to use it to burn to, it keeps telling me: "No media detected in drive F: Please insert a compatible media to start the write process". Now mind you, when I had my Lite-On installed, they removed the old DVD writer because it would only burn DVD+ discs. I wanted a drive that would cover all types of media, and this is what I have now:
DVD+R write speed 20X, DVD+R DL write speed 8X, DVD+RW rewrite speed 8X, DVD-R write speed 20X, DVD-R DL write speed 8X, DVD-RW rewrite speed 6X, DVD-RAM rewrite speed 12X, DVD-ROM read speed 16X, CD-R write speed 48X, CD-RW rewrite speed 32X, CD-ROM read speed 48X.

The only way I have found use for that drive is to put an original Cd in (HP DVD Writer 200j 1.36 [F]), and a blank cd in my other drive (Lite-On Writer [E]) to copy one cd. And that is all I've been able to accomplish since getting my computer back from Stone Computer. I'm going to call them after the holidays, because I believe they took out the regular CD player out (returned it to me) and possibly installed the old DVD Writer in its slot. At this point, I'm grasping at straws here because I don't know exactly what they've done to my computer. Let me hobble over and get the box with what they took out and look a bit closer to what is inside. Yep! that is EXACTLY what they did!! I just looked in the box from the new DVD writer, and what they returned to me is....my CD ROM DRIVE!! Maybe that's why I am having so many problems? Are both drives possibly competing with each other? Who knows...but I know one thing, you folks have done your best to help me, and I honestly appreciate it. I'm tired, and out almost 50 DVD-R discs up to this point, not to mention my frustration level has soared. But I do believe that I need to roll some heads come Monday morning when Stone Computer opens.
((Thanks for all your kindness & patience))

please read the official dvdfab guide to become more familiar with it.
http://dvdfab.com/docs/

Yes, I just finished printing everything off and when my nerves settle down, and I get a bit of sleep, I will tackle the reading of them during breakfast. I truly do appreciate all the help you and others have posted & the kindness you all have shown on this subject. I've been printing off all the new postings so that with a bit of luck, I'll be able to gain victory this with this program ::crossing fingers::

if you already have a dvdshrink output burn with imgburn.

Please explain "burn with imgburn" I'm sorry, I don't know what you are referring to nor how to accomplish it?

This is what I see when I went to burn from my hard drive, is this correct?

Re: Can DVD Fab copy a copy of a movie?

Hi again Mrs Gee,

My family and I had a great trip and thanks for the send off...
On the other hand, sorry to hear of your persistent problems.
I see Troy jumped in to help, so you're in good hands.

Img is a burn engine. Just an outstanding piece of software developed by Lightning UK...the same developer of the legendary dvddecrypter.

Since Fab ripped the dvd in file mode, first you'll have to use Img in "build mode" and then burn it with Img

Here's LUK's homepage for Img:
Img

and a short guide on
How to burn a DVD Folder with ImgBurn

Unfortunately, you still have to rectify the "hardware" issues and since Stone Computer screwed up, they're on the hook.
I don't mean to be intrusive or presumptive, but I'm not sure how well you can see and manuever inside the case. If you're able to do as Troy suggested re: unstalling, unplugging and reinstalling the optical drives, it'll be helpful.
If this doesn't do it, let Stone Computer have a go at it.

This could be anything from a bad or incorrect cable...
(you should have a 40 pin/80 wire cable as opposed to the older 40 pin/40 wire cable...btw, this is the wide, flat ribbon cable).
...to faulty connections to improper jumper settings on the optical drives, etc., etc.

I'm curious as to the integrity of the ripped files.
I would install VLC and as Troy mentioned, there are no compatibility issues with this player. It's free, easy to use, does not rely on outside codecs and will play darn near anything.

Open VLC > click File > click Open Directory from the dropdown >
navigate to the dvd folder and click ok. This should open the file as if it were the dvd.

Hope this helps and let us know...

Good luck.

I totally agree...it certainly isn't anything I did that's for sure.

I don't mean to be intrusive or presumptive, but I'm not sure how well you can see and manuever inside the case. If you're able to do as

Oh, I don't consider you to be intrusive or presumptive at all. I am not the brightest bulb in the box when it comes to doing anything inside my case, I will have them have a go at it.

(you should have a 40 pin/80 wire cable as opposed to the older 40 pin/40 wire cable...btw, this is the wide, flat ribbon cable).

Okay, it sounds a bit foreign in nature to me, but I am going to print off our communications and relay it to them. I can only hope and pray that they don't treat me as though I am an imbecile. I've had a go around with them when they had my computer to do the upgrade (remove the existing writer drive and install the new one) because they broke my on/off button, they put it in place with scotch tape and they accused me of bringing it in that way.

Mind you, the computer was new, right out of the box, never used to say the least. It still has the plastic film over the front, you know, to protect it from scratches etc. during shipping. Come to think about it, I still haven't removed that plastic come to think about it.

I'm curious as to the integrity of the ripped files.
I would install VLC and as
Troy mentioned, there are no compatibility issues with this player. It's free, easy to use, does not rely on outside codecs and will play darn near anything.
I'm sorry, I have missed somewhere where Troy had mentioned VLC

Can you possibly point me to it? Honestly, my mind in the last couple of weeks is running on overload, please forgive me.
As far as the integrity of the ripped files I did with DVDDecrypter (the program by the same person who did ImgBurn I believe), then using Shrink to shrink it so that it can fit on one DVD-R disc, I believe worked fine. I don't know, if I zip up that folder, would you like me to send it to you somehow to look over?
At the present time, I am trying burn the original full disc using DVDFab HD Decrypter. I put my original DVD in as the "source", and my "target" is my DVDfab folder. So far, it's still scanning the "source" so we'll see what happens ::crossing fingers::

Open VLC > click File > click Open Directory from the dropdown >
navigate to the dvd folder and click ok. This should open the file as if it were the dvd.

Hope this helps and let us know...

Still plugging away here as to see what I can possibly remedy before I have the opportunity to get my computer back to Stone Computer. I will most definitly keep you all up to date. After all, I couldn't imagine leaving such nice folks hanging Something might be of help to someone else in the future. Lord I wouldn't wish all that I have and am going through trying to sort this all out. What a nightmare!

Good luck.

((Thank you))

Sorry for the confusion. You had asked Troy if there were compatibility issues with VLC and Windows XP Media Edition
I was referring to his answer which was no.

Yeah, I'm surprised we all aren't more confused with this stuff, particularly since we're dealing with multiple conversations, not to mention quite a disparity of time and distance...and then there's my senile dementia...

Here's a great PC Guide.
While it seems a bit overwelming at first glance, it's straightforward and easy to to understand, yet remains comprehensive.

For eg., take the 40 pin/80 wire cable issue I mentioned.
Navigate from Topic Index > IDE/ATA Configuration and Cabling > Ultra DMA (80-Conductor) IDE/ATA Cables

and Eureeka!...you've got a nice description with illustrations...

Re: Can DVD Fab copy a copy of a movie?

Hello Everyone!
Just dropping by to let everyone know that I haven't fallen off the face of the earth over here.
Mainman...
I wanted to let you know that even though I've been quite ill, I managed to get to look inside my tower, and it appears as though I have the 80-conductor (the blue one, going by the picture provided earlier), and everything seems to be connected. I didn't mess around with anything because I don't have the knowledge of things, and it was a tad overwhelming because everything is so packed in there, it looks like a spaghetti factory there...sheesh!!
At any rate, I have tinkered around (reading tutorials and such) and have finally gotten to back up 3 of my personal dvd movies.
What I ended up doing was hooking up my external Mad Dog Multimedia MegaStor 7-in-one drive. I use the internal Lite-On DVD RW LH 20A1P as my source drive, and then the Mad Dog for my output drive. I have found that by using the one program "DVD-Cloner V" things work quite well. I also have had success in using DVDFab to decrypt my movies, but I'm still having a bit of a problem of burning right after to a dvd 4.7gb disc.
I do believe that, somewhere my settings for DVDFab are goofy, and I'm sure that in time after reading more of the tutorial, I should be able to grasp where my error is. I know that I should be able to just use one program (instead of two) and if I stay steadfast in trying to make it work, in time I'll master that program also.
I do have a few questions though, and I don't know if I'm on the right board or not (maybe you or someone could direct me to the right place?) I need some help in converting .wma songs (I want them as .mp3's), some podcasts and such.
I appreciate any help that can be provided from you folks that have been around much longer than I have been. I'm not sure if these things can be converted so that I can put them to disc or not?
Well, you all take care, and have a good one! I'll try to check back soon

Glad to hear you are making progress. On the WMA's->MP3's etc, I have not found anything better than MediaMonkey.

Perhaps someone else would like to comment though?

Yup, agree with Gregi...
but to be honest, I don't do much of this.

The standard version is free...here's a safe download site:
MediaMonkey
and a
MediaMonkey Guide

Maybe Gregi or others know of a better guide?

Re: Can DVD Fab copy a copy of a movie?

Great to hear from you again MrsGee...

So your LiteOn actually works as a ripper with "DVD Cloner V" huh?...good for you!
I looked over your posts, kinda quickly, to refresh this old brain.
In my mind, the cables and connections, etc., are still suspect as well as a lot of other stuff.

Any chance Stone Computer has looked at this yet?
Do you know anyone else...family member, friend that could help?

When you get a chance try this:
Update to Platinum 4.0.5.1 BetaUse your LiteOn as the source and rip to your hdd with the following settings:
Be certain to have Always enable PathPlayer checked
Choose Full Disc
Choose DVD9 as the "target size"

Rip a movie to your hdd and try to open it with VLC (you have this already although not sure if it's installed.

Best of luck and hang in there...

Re: Can DVD Fab copy a copy of a movie?

Hi Gregboy, & Mainman,

Thanks for the links for Gregi, I truly appreciate it. I downloaded both Media Monkey and the guide, tested it out and it worked great! After I dinked around a bit with it, I went to rest my back and legs a bit (sitting in this chair really gets to this old body any more) and I got to thinking, somewhere I saved on a disc a similar program in which I had purchased sometime ago. The program I’m speaking about is dBpoweramp which does pretty much the same thing. So after resting a bit, I hobbled back to my computer room, and searched through my discs stored in my cabinet and found it. What a ditz brain I am sometime sheesh! At any rate, I got all my music that had been in the format of .wmp on my computer converted to .mp3 and put to cd(s). It took me awhile, but I finally accomplished that task.
Now I need to figure out how to get my quicktime and iTune things converted so that I can put them to dvd disc(s). What I have are sermons (in podcast format) that I’ve saved to my computer, and I want to be able to put them to dvd discs in order to watch them on our dvd players. Not sure how to do it, or what to program would work best?

<< So your LiteOn actually works as a ripper with "DVD Cloner V" huh?...good for you!

>>

Mainmane, don’t feel bad, I have to do the same thing in order to try and keep abreast of what had transpired. In fact, although it might sound a bit weird to some, I’ve been copying and pasting all along to Word Pad so I can quickly refer to what has been. But yes, my LiteOn worked as a ripper, and I had no problems with DVD Cloner V whatsoever. If I could have jumped up out of this chair to do a “happy dance” I certainly would have that’s for sure! ::giggling:: As I said also, I’ve had no problems ripping with my external MAD Dog Multi Media drive either. I just use the HP DVD Writer 200j as a cd drive only since it seems to have it’s own issue(s) when it comes to ripping. It’s really weird as to why in the beginning I had problems with the LiteOn drive, and now it is working. I’m clueless as to why, but I’m not certainly going to complain.
No, I haven’t gotten my computer back to Stone Computer simply because trying to get someone (when they have at least an hour in time to donate for me) to transport me and my computer out there and back can be cumbersome. As far as a friend(s), since becoming disabled, it seems as though everyone has fallen off of the face of the earth, especially, since I cannot do (or go) like I used to. I rarely even get a phone call or a visit anymore, and I have come to accept it. Believe it or not, when I had been part of the living so to speak, everyone I had been associated with didn’t have the slightest idea about what I do with my computer. When I would try to talk to them about it (or things related to it, software, etc.), it was like talking a whole different language. So naturally I have to rely on myself, or other kind folks online to help me when I have a problem with something. I just thank my lucky stars that there are folks out there that I can get to online with that could possibly instruct me with issues as they arise. I really hate having to depend on others. But at any rate, I did call them again (Stone Computer, I know they totally dread to hear my name and voice) and questioned certain things. I stated what I had been experiencing with my computer, and I got absolutely no where. Take that back, I did get something out of them, elevated blood pressure, and a major headache that lasted for 2 days! I’ve been doing business with them on and off for…I’d feel safe in saying for approximately 8 years now, and lately they have been going through employees like water through a sieve. It’s sad because I have had them do a lot of work on my computer(s) over the years, and had trusted them wholeheartedly. Now I really have reservations when I have to call or deal with them anymore.

However, when I get the chance later today, I certainly will try your suggestion of:

<<When you get a chance try this:

I don’t have VLC installed on my computer. However, I have downloaded it, and will get it installed later today. I also will update to DVDFab Platinum 4.0.5.1 BETA as you suggested also. I’m so excited! I have a new movie that I purchased from Barnes and Noble which finally arrived U.P.S. yesterday, so now I’m really curious to see what I can accomplish. I’ll keep you posted *Ü*

((Thanks)) to you and everyone else who has contributed to this conversation! I certainly couldn’t have gotten this far without the help that has been provided. I am excited to have learned what I have, and warmly welcome any future knowledge that can be provided in the future. Okay, I’m off to rest, so I’ll check back later. Have a good one!

MrsGee,

Good to hear from you and congrats on all your progress.
I meant to add one more item (if you can stand any more advice).
In Common settings > DVD > Read > I/O Mode
This probably is set to Auto. If you experience trouble, change it to SPTI and likewise, if problems with SPTI, change it to Auto.

I have to tell you...I attended elementary school in Connecticut with a girl named Linda Gee. I haven't seen her for 48 years, but when I see your user name, there she is! Reminds me of the movie "Stand By Me".
Here's to a great flick and great old friends...

Re: Can DVD Fab copy a copy of a movie?

Hi Mrs Gee...

dBPoweramp was a good product but I personally feel that it is now a little outdated and has been surpassed by products such as MediaMonkey.

On to your converting Podcasts, etc to DVD, I woould suggest that you look at 2 options:-

Option 1. Grab yourself a DVD authoring package. A good, relatively inexpensive package that I would recommend is ULead Video Studio and you can purchase online.

Option 2. Get yourself a Network Media Player whic, once you have awire to your computer, can play all files stored there. I favour the Ziova products but I'm biased as I am an Alpha tester and have a lot to do with their forum and development.

This way, you can use FAb to produce a file which will play about one third of the size and the same quality or just keep the full ISO on the hard disk.

I know what you mean about the "Luddites" (Google this term) as I am 60 years old and none of my contemporaries seem to have any computer knowledge or interest.

Regards, GregiBoy

Good one Gregi...and here I thought you were a fresh, pimply-faced, young pup!...just kidding...
Seriously, it's good to see a couple more old geezers like myself on the forum. I'm a year and a few weeks from 60 myself.

Okay, I’ve had it on Auto and still haven’t had any luck, so I will try that later and see of I can achieve success that way.

Well, MrsGee is what our children’s friends years ago referred to me as. Our last name for some or other another reason seemed a bit different and they couldn’t rap their minds around it or something (?) so they started calling me by that name. Then it took off when my husband coached little league football and baseball, (I did cheerleading and softball) so everyone started to refer to him as MrGee. Now they are all adults ::sigh:: and when we have the opportunity to run into any of them or anyone who wasn’t affiliated in sports but just as a bystander, they still refer to us the same way….I Love It Though!! ::giggling::

I’m happy though that my username brought back fond memories from your past. I can be heartwarming sometimes when something triggers someone’s memory bank, eh? *Ü*
Oh my!! Stand By Me was a great movie, and one of my favorites!! One of my ultimate favorites is “The Big Chill” as well. I have a few others too.

Congrats on your upcoming birthday my friend! I am a few months into my 50th, and I am really looking forward to the 60’s and 70’s as well *Ü*

Hi Mrs Gee...

dBPoweramp was a good product but I personally feel that it is now a little outdated and has been surpassed by products such as MediaMonkey.

Oh okay, I will stick with MediaMonkey since you’ve stated it has surpassed dBpoweramp, thank you *Ü*

On to your converting Podcasts, etc to DVD, I woould suggest that you look at 2 options:-

Option 1. Grab yourself a DVD authoring package. A good, relatively inexpensive package that I would recommend is ULead Video Studio and you can purchase online.

Alrighty, I am familiar with Ulead products. I use Paint Shop Pro for doing my graphics, and I have some of their plugins for different effects, etc. while using Paint Shop Pro. So this may be a very good option.

Option 2. Get yourself a Network Media Player whic, once you have awire to your computer, can play all files stored there. I favour the Ziova products but I'm biased as I am an Alpha tester and have a lot to do with their forum and development.

Hmmmm….this sounds like a good option as well. Now by saying “awire” do you mean something that connect via usb port or? Sorry for not understanding.

This way, you can use FAb to produce a file which will play about one third of the size and the same quality or just keep the full ISO on the hard disk.

So please clarify, using either Ulead or something like Ziova can both produce the desired end product I'm looking for?

I know what you mean about the "Luddites" (Google this term) as I am 60 years old and none of my contemporaries seem to have any computer knowledge or interest.

I googled “Luddites” as you suggested, and I now have a new word and it’s meaning in my knowledge base ((Thank you)) *Ü* I so love learning new things, and really try each day to make it my goal to learn something new ::smiling:: If anyone else happens to read this post but may be afraid to ask, it means:

Luddite (noun)
1. any opponent of technological progress
2. one of the 19th century English workmen who destroyed laborsaving machinery that they thought would cause unemployment

There! I believe that our daughter who is an 8th grade English teacher would be proud of me ::giggling::

Have a good evening my friends, I'll check back tomorrow to see if there is anything new here, or if I have any new progress to report.

OK.... I'll try to simply explain it.....

Yes, ULead VideoStudio will enable you to take video clips from different sources and turn that source into a DVD or a file that the Ziova will play.

DVD Fab will already turn any DVD into a file that the Ziove will play. There are a couple of methods but we won't discuss that here.

The idea of the Ziova is that it will take computer files and play them on your TV/Surround sound system. It will do this with video, audio and digital photography.

To do this, the files need to be stored on your computer and the Ziova must be networked to be able to access them.

The best way to do this by the use of ethernet cabling. Most computers these days have a network card inbuilt and this is usually attached to your ADSL/Cable modem. Some modem/routers have multiple ethernet ports so it would be as simple as attaching the Ziova to that by an ethernet cable.

The Ziova then plugs into your TV using an audio and video cable.

Have a look at their website. www.ziova.com

Regards.
Greg

Okay, this sounds as though it might be the way for me to go since I won't have to worry about having to add any more hardware. Maybe I'll look into it in the future.

Oh, okay...I guess that's something maybe I don't need to know or maybe I can learn it in the future when my mind isn't so overwhelmed just trying to learn the basics.

Wow! It really looks like a nice machine!! But honestly, all of this is a bit over my head Especially since I'm trying to learn everything myself, along with the help you folks who have graciously taken the time to help teach me of course. I really have to say that I envy all of you folks for having so much knowledge! ((Thanks Gregi)) for explaining it to me and going through all the trouble. I do apologize if I've been a pest of sorts. I just want to learn and learn it all now I know it isn't a good thing, for one has to learn how to crawl before they learn how to walk and then run so to speak. You all have a good one, and I'll check back in the future.

Re: Can DVD Fab copy a copy of a movie?

If you are trying to make a copy of a copy, the only program needed is to burn it. Either copy disk to disk if you have two burners or copy and paste the contents of the copy over to the hard drive and then burn it. If the copy is too scratched or bad, the copy to hard drive won't copy (it's a good way to know how good the burn was).

Re: Can DVD Fab copy a copy of a movie?

Okay,
Here's what I've found out by diddlin' around today....

In copying my original movie (a little movie only 22 minutes long and only 1.82 gb that I purchased for my nephews & nieces some time ago) using my:

1) M: Mad Dog Multimedia MegaStor 7-in-1 external drive, using DVDFab Platinum I could copy the movie disc to disc with everything, meaning trailers, warnings, etc. as well as from a folder on my desk top to disc. Another words, I created 2 discs.

2) F: Lite-On DVDRW internal drive, I managed to make a copy using a folder I had created and saved to my desk top, and also by disc to disc. Another words, I created 2 discs here also.

3) E: HP DVD Writer 200j 1.36 internal drive, I couldn't do anything until I used a DVD+R disc. Evidently that drive will only burn using DVD+R/RW discs (I made only one copy using this method because I only had 1 DVD+R disc), and has cd properties as well.

Since I am not able to utilize both my internal burners at the same time to accomplish what I want, I will have to use both of my F: (internal) and my M: (external) drives if I want to use DVD-R discs.

Later on, I'm going to try my darndest to burn one of my larger purchased discs yet again both from a folder on my desk top, and either disc to disc (if I can manage to shrink the whole thing down using DVDFab Platinum) or just the movie itself using 1 DVD-R disc. Now that I know my E: drive is useless whe it comes to burning, I will only use it to play my cd's and if I ever decide to invest in a bunch of DVD+R/RW discs while using DVDFab. Anyway, I'm not sure how it's going to come out, but I am bound and determined to get this to work before my next birthday! ::giggling::

By the way, copying a copy of what I have on disc, worked well also, but ((Thanks Mike)) for the tip on copying/pasting if a disc is damaged. I hadn't been aware that that was even an option.

Will check back later...See ya!
