Re: HDRW720 Need answers and Questions and a FAQ

You'll have to ask us the questions before we can provide answers.

Meanwhile, how much do you know already? Enough to use the machine to make recordings?

Do you have a book of instructions (user manual) that came with the machine?

Re: HDRW720 Need answers and Questions and a FAQ

I have a 720/17 and it even works some of the time. I've had some strange problems in the past and they have all been remedied by re-setting the machine. The software seems to be 'buggy' and gets corrupted by various things. The TVGuide is especially problematic.

If you have a specific question, hocus1, I will try to help. Although, other than reading the manual, there isn't much you can do but re-set the machine if it is acting up.

And for my postal code.

1st question is how do you look at what firmware version is in use with the HDRW702/17 if it is now upto date, how do you correct it? I do have a
dvdcd burner so know how to use a flash.

Re: HDRW720 Need answers and Questions and a FAQ

Hi hocus1,

The information you are looking for is in the owners manual and it can be downloaded from the Philips site at the link below.

http://www.usasupport.philips.com/pr...ByModelNo=true

If, for some reason, you are not able to get the above link to work, then you can get there thru www.usasupport.philips.com.

The system version is a hidden command in the 'Disk' menu. So here's how to get to it.
1) hit the 'Disk' button (you get a blue screen with disk info)
2) hit the 'System' button (you get a blue screen with arrows right and down)
3) hit the down arrow until 'Status Box/Standby/Display' is selected
4) hit the right button to get to 'Status Box' then down button to 'Display' then hit the key once again to select the line below 'Display' and the system info should display.
5) on the fourth line of the system info you will see the software version (mine is 3.2 which is the latest - I think).

On the Philips site there is also the 'Firmware Upgrade Software' to upgrade your machine. The directions are included with the file and I've never had a problem making the cdrs that are required.

I should also note that the TVGuide info may not be provided by your cable company. If that is the case the TVGuide function will not work and you will have to use the timer or the VCR+ system. But keep in mind that the TVGuide information is only updated when the machine is in standby and it can take a couple of days.

The operation of this machine is very confusing and it will take some time to figure it out. Good luck!

Re: HDRW720 Need answers and Questions and a FAQ

I followed these instructions and made a firmware CD,then updated the Philips recorder all when according to the information presented. But the TV Guide seemed to be the problem then. Seems the TVGuide for my area (postal code) needs some work Fox networks stations are incorrect.

That's very possible. The 'station group' you select when setting up the TVGuide may be incorrect or maybe the Fox info provided may be wrong. I just discovered that my TVGuide doesn't show TBS. The simple solution, to recording from these stations, is to use the 'timer' button. There isn't anything else you can do and I don't think it is an error of the recorder.

It sounds like you are making progress since the upgrade was successful. Be sure to read the other thread on the 720. When the machine works, I really like it!

Re: HDRW720 Need answers and Questions and a FAQ

Do you mean you returned the HDRW720 (a standalone DVD recorder), or your PC burner (the BenQ 1640)? It's not very clear because the standalone recorders are not usually called "burners".

Re: HDRW720 Need answers and Questions and a FAQ

Hi rgflo64 and welcome to CD Freaks

If by "archiving", you mean burning from the hard drive to a DVD disc: what brand of discs are you using and what's their speed rating?
