Problem with Menu in "Good Night and Good Luck"

Hi all,

I've just started using DVD Remake Pro to edit my backed up DVDs, so I'm still learning. I've encountered a problem with Good Night and Good Luck that I can't seem to figure out. First, know that I've ripped it to my hard drive with RipIt4Me 1-click mode set to "jump to first valid menu."

Now then, when I open up the ripped files in either PowerDVD or in the Debug menu of DRM Pro (no editing yet) the dvd acts perfectly normal. no problems.

If I change anything, though, such as hiding the "language" button on the root menu or getting rid of unwanted trailers, then when I play/debug it, it'll load up the root menu for about 4 seconds and automatically jump to the movie, without giving me a change to select special features or anything else.

I'm not that familiar with messing around with PGCs and Pre- and post-commands, so what should I be looking for? How can I correct this?

Thanks,
MorbidPenguin

I should note that I'm getting this same problem with "Paradise Now." Not sure exactly what it is, but these are the only two movies I"ve encountered this problem with thus far.

Any ideas on how to correct it?
Thanks again!

Please state the version you're using. Hiding a button should not break menu navigation at all.

Don't modify anything and do a test and full export. How does it play? Is the root menu a still or motion?

Re: Problem with Menu in "Good Night and Good Luck"

I'm using the latest version, 3.5.3. I just tried out the demo today and was so impressed I promptly bought it.

I get the same thing on a test and full export without modifying anything - Root menu pops up, audio comes in, lasts about 4-5 seconds and then promptly moves into the main movie automatically without giving me a chance to select special features or anything else.

The root menu is a still, I think. I mean, there is audio, but there is no motion in the menus, just a picture of the main guy and the buttons. The menu lasts for exactly 1 minute and 1 second and then will move automatically into the main movie.

However, the test/full export from DRM Pro will last exactly 4 seconds and then move into the main movie - without having edited anything.

Same thing happens with "Paradise Now" - It's a still menu that plays for exactly 1:45 and then movies automatically into the main movie, but a test/full export without modifying anything plays the still menu for exactly 4 seconds before moving automatically into the main movie. So, DRM Pro must be changing something within the navigation.

Thanks for helping me with this - I really appreciate it.

This does not sound right. If you don't change anything, DRMPro do not change navigation nor modify the length of play. It's even stranger that you tried both DVDs with still menus and both output exactly 4 seconds of audio.

If all of your menus are stills, would you mind post the original menu I'll see if I can duplicate. Basically zip all the IFOs and menu VOB (whether it is in VIDEO_TS.VOB or VTS_xx_0.VOB) only. Upload to some file hosting site and provide the link.

I'd like to see your DvdReMake output as well. Do a test export since you say it behaves the same as a full export. Then zip all the IFOs and the menu VOB only.

Re: Problem with Menu in "Good Night and Good Luck"

Okay, I've uploaded the Menu Vobs and all IFOs. The Original Menu can be found:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=90H55A9R

The Test Export of the menus without editing can be found here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NY6QXXI3

I should take back what I said earlier. I've noticed that the same thing happens during the DRM Debug mode no matter if its the original menus or the test export/full export menus - it plays, shows the main menu screen and moves into the main movie.

The difference, however, is when you play it on DVD, either in the player or in PowerDVD/VLC/Media Player Class = the original menus are normal, the export menus last for 4 seconds. So, I don't know if there's something special in the debug menu that makes it do that, but I apologize for having to clarify now.

Thanks for helping me with is. Again, I really appreciate it.

If the export behaves like the original, then I don't see anything wrong with it. What you describe with the original menu's behavior is expected as well since that's how the dvd is authored. Look at the root menu cell and see that the Still time is 0 sec (Programs pane).

Test export menus lasting for 4 sec is normal. Actually it is 5 sec. Check under Tools -> Options -> Test DVD Export to see how many seconds you set for. By default, DRMPro sets 5 sec.

I hide the Language button and export, and the root menu plays just fine for 1 min 1 sec. Test export plays for # sec I set in the Options.

If you don't want the movie to play after Root menu finishes, you can fix that as well. Just add a cell command LinkTopProgram (Cell Commands pane), and change Command # to 1 (Programs pane). This will make the menu loops itself indefinitely until you press a button.

Re: Problem with Menu in "Good Night and Good Luck"

ahh, okay. That explains it. I thought it was odd that the dvd would automatically start playing... I've never encountered a dvd that did that (or at least never waited long enough to see it happen).

Your suggestion worked - the dvd loops now. Thanks for your help.
