I am not a novice when it comes to PC's however this problem has really stumped me. I used to have a P4 2.6 running Windows XP Home and burned my DVD's using DVDShrink and NERO, great no problems. I thought I would treat myself and bought a DELL Quad Core 3 Gig RAM 8800gt GRaphics anyway all singing pc with Vista 32bit. I tried using DVDShrink with NERO 8 and the DVD's would not play on my house DVD player mmmm I thought and changed to IMGBurn again they would play on my PC but not my house DVD. Tried using 1ClickDVD Pro still the same problem, the DVD when trying to read sometimes started but went "Blocky" and jumped. I am really brassed off with this and I am thinking of throwing this pc in the bin. Oh forgot to mention I have replaced the burner twice and even tried running XP again still the same please please somone help!! Oh I have run a full diagnostic on the pc and all seems in order

It seems a typical bad burned disc problem

Most of times this is due to a low quality disc. What discs are you using exactly? Did you try to update the drive firmware? At what speed are you burning these discs?

Yeah I have tried updating the firmware and because the drives are fairly new there is no update.

The media used always worked fine on my other machine I tend to use Sum Vision Gold top 8x however I have also tried Memorex with the same result.

It all started when I changed my pc, I still have my old machine and DVDShrink works fine. I don't understand why they will play fine on my pc dvd but not my house dvd (connected to the TV set).

Both media you are using are very low quality discs. I strongly suggest to get better discs, like Verbatim. In most of cases this solve the playbacj issues. Some standalones simply are too picky about burned discs, and low quality media usually contains a lot of errors on the disc after the burn.

Okay I will give it a try, why do you think the media worked fine when I burned the disks with my old PC?

Indeed it's difficult to answer to this question. If I understood correctly, the old PC used a different burner. Probably the old burner has a better firmware for these discs.

I will try your suggestion and get some new media tomorrow and let you know the outcome. Know anyone who wants a load of coasters!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi guys - Gues what I tried Verbatim discs the best I could find and still the same result (Verbatim Branded Taiyo Yuden 16x Speed 4.7GB DVD-R).

Anyone any more ideas? Please or do I bin the pc!!!!

Probably it is the firmware. Are you sure that the burner has the latest available? Check on Dell site if there are some updates.

It is not necessary to trash the entire computer if the burner is not working good

If you can afford it, an external burner is a good solution.

Another solution is to change the default burner with a new one (I mean with a different model bought by you separately, not from Dell ) if you know how to open the case and connect cables

Just a curiosity: at what speed did you burn these verbatim?

Could you post your IMGBurn or 1ClickPRO log sessions
- of the failed attempts ?

That may give us a little more info to work with
