.So if your considerations are true, RatDVD should be more efficient in terms of compression and in the end it should have better video quality.

| Re: RatDVD -The new shrinking technology? yes, but be careful. Don't put the bitrate too low because the codec isn't THAT great. Like I've said in other posts: set the settings to variable bitrate instead of constant, and set it to 1500 Kbps or so. |

The advantage to RatDVD is that it keeps the DVD structure intact, unlike DivX.As to DVD Player compatibility, I also did read a while ago about DVD Players supporting RatDVD, I don't know if it came through or if there are any that support this, personally I doubt it.

| Re: RatDVD -The new shrinking technology? That's what I meant about the codec not being THAT great. I'm sure that he could use open source x264 to store stuff because it's one of the best codec algorithms that exist right now but he doesn't seem to be very interested in that option I don't know why. Maybe in a future release he'll let us decide? |

| Re: RatDVD -The new shrinking technology? The author of RatDVD says: "There are three main reasons I have my own codec. First, I needed to store many of the original MPEG2 features to restore the original. Second, I had this idea that a real transcoder would be better than a decoder/encoder approach. Third, H.264 and XviD (and other standard codecs) are covered by a wide range of patents and patent pools and I wanted to keep the program completely free." Hmmm...I thought H.264 and XviD were free...boh! http://www.ratdvd.dk/faq.htm#codec |

| Re: RatDVD -The new shrinking technology? x264 is open source, h264 isn't so if he doesn't include x264 is because he's too stubborn: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X264 http://developers.videolan.org/x264.html |
