Where can you buy a Samsung SN-S082M (or similar)

I have the Samsung SN-SO82H but I think I need the Samsung SN-SO82M. The SN-SO82M has the light scribe and the SN-SO82H does not. Does anyone know where to get one. I did google and shopping search and have not been able to find one. Other then the light scribe part they are basically the same. I would like to find a site that would ship it to the U.S.

On this link I read the review on it. It does not indicate if it has been released yet or if it was released where you can buy it.

I thought about cross flashing the firmware of SN-SO82H with SN-SO82M
Like it mentioned in the post above.
But in this link below it mentioned that you can't use firmware to enable lightscribe because you need additional hardware to write and detect lightscribe disks.

After reading this link am I correct in assuming that even if I successfully got my H drive to accept the M drives firmware it would still not give me lightscribe because even if the drives laser knew how to write to the light scribe disk I would still be missing the additional hardware needed to detect the lightscribe disk. So can anyone confirm that this is how the lightscribe hardware works and that the only way to get lightscribe is to but a drive that already had the exact lightscribe hardware. The manufacture of Samsung says that my drive is not lightscribe enabled. I want to make sure that there is nothing that I can do to my drive to enable lightscribe and allow it to create lightscribe disks successfully. That only Drives that the manufacture says have lightscribe hardware or are lightscribe enabled can write lightscribe disk labels.
Thank you. Help on any of these things is appreciated

You might ask in our Bargain Basement Forum
But it seems, this drive is indeed hard to get.

That is correct. You need a drive that has Lightscribe capability out of the box. My suggestion: buy an external Lightscribe cabable drive.

Re: Where can you buy a Samsung SN-S082M

Thanks for replying its good to know I understood it correctly. As I read that the center ring that looks sort of like a bar code on a the disk needs a special sensor to read that code so it knows how to handle the disk and I suspected it needed more hardware to properly read and handle the special code so the drive can properly calibrate its self for the disk or something like that. Any way I was reading about the SN-S082D do you know if it has lightscribe and can you confirm the write speeds. As no 2 sites seam to agree on this even the samsung sites cant agree on the lightscribe like this site says yes for lightscribe http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/d...EBN&fullspec=F And this site says no on lightscribe http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/ Also google just has the same issue that as half say it does the other half say iit does not. like this site says yes for lightscribe http://www.ibuildcomputer.com/cgi-bi...023393&p_vlt=L and this one says no to it http://www.atacom.com/program/print_...8D&USER_ID=www Do you know who is right because if the write speeds for the SN-S082D are the same as the SN-S082M and the SN-S082D also has lightscribe than I think it will work and I probably can just buy it let me know thank you again as it has been very helpful

Both do agree that this drive does not have Lightscribe capabilities. They can handle Lightscribe discs as normal media, but that would be just a waste of money.

Since slim drives just are stuck with 8x DVD and 24x CD, that part of the specs might be indeed the same. What is different, that is the write strategies for media. The older 082D is probably lacking support of newer media. Firmware support for slim drives is poor in most cases, so the performance of the older drive might be worse. And, just to repeat: 082D also does not have Lightscribe capabilities.

Re: Where can you buy a Samsung SN-S082M

You are right I just re read it it is data side burning only. There are 5 burning things that I wanted in my slim drive that the 082M all provide 1. DVD-R 8X 2. DVD+R DUAL 6X or higher 3. DVD-RW not+ 6X or higher 4. CD-RW 24X 5. the Light Scribe Label burning Are their any other slim drives out their that have those 5 things or is the SN-S082M really the only slim drive with them and if so than are their any samsung OEM's or Distributors or others that if I am willing to pay for it would consider special ordering the SN-S082M or just be willing to tell me who might be willing to do so. I have already tried to email samsung got a generic computer response. Than when I called no one their could tell me even one place that sells their ODD products. They all said one of 3 things 1. I dont know who sells samsung 2. I can only tell that information to OEM's ,Distributors or other business only company's (witch comes across as stupid as if you are one of these chances are you ether already know that stuff or have access to the phone numbers to the higher ups in the company that they never release to the public) 3. the first thing they ask for is my business info with them and when I cant provide any they refuse to talk to me any more. I had considered an external but want to try to avoid it if possible because I use my laptop frequently both for travel and on site use so an external will add a lot more to carry with both weight and space and don't want to use up the extra usb or firewire ports as I dont have many available. if anythings comes to mind I would be in your debt. Ether way thanks for telling me about the difference in wording of those two samsung pages as I was this close to just buying that other drive so I cant thank you enough for that. You just saved me both a lot time, money and even more disappointment.

LS slim drives are really hard to find. Perhaps getting some OEM version off ebay or similar.
I have seen one option: LG GSA T20L. Not available separately also, but its external twin, LG GSA E50L. The drive can be removed from its enclosure and used internally. Maybe this is an option, since this unit can really be bought (newegg.com has them in stock).
Or, if you don't mind about mobility, then a standard half height drive in an external enclosure. This is the solution, I would prefer.

Re: Where can you buy a Samsung SN-S082M

I didn't think of removing the drive from a portable external. Would something like that work with the DX-8A1H-05 listed here http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?...=206&Itemid=87 and here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...Tpk=DX-8A1H-05

Re: Where can you buy a Samsung SN-S082M

Hi,

at least this drive fulfils your requirements, but I have no idea about the quality of that unit.
But if you want to go the external route, why not a "half height" unit like this for example (Newegg link inside)?

Also, I'll move this thread to the "User and Comments" section, since there can be more input expected.
