Well, in overall performance for me, the 1640 (but not made unless you find it rebadged, and that might be iffy). For many others, their 1620's are still going strong. The current stock of BenQ offerings... perhaps a 1650 or 1655 (depending on what's available to your area, and get some good media, like Taiyo Yuden or MCC for the PS2 (as they can be picky, depending on the media used for the backup).

Re: what BenQ is the best one out there?

The new 1655 is decnt I have one...

However the "freezing" maybe attributed to your PS2 optics! They may need a slight power calibration to be able to read the dvd-r or dvd+r media you are using.... I would buy several brands (in 5 packs) what I mean by this buy some made in tiawan and made in japan... those should either be CMC or TY or maybe find some MKM's. Get a good burner that will burn the least amount of errors on the disks. Then take apart your ps2 (if you are not ready to do this then you should not get backup games...almost anyone that plays backups needs to adjust the laser when the system is aged' cause reading the dvd's that are skipped causes the laser power to change over time and you need to boost it and change the focus to make it read the writables). It only will need a turn of a mm or so.. not more thanthat.. turn to much either way on the pentonmeter and the disk with just spin rapidly or STOP.

I had the same deal with my playstation one. I tried ty media in it.. would not work! then i got crappy walmart brand CMC media and they play almost flawless. So you will need to do some investment on media for trial and error tests. Burn the same game on all three. Make sure it is a good rip!!!! In other words tested on a buddies system that is playable. Some fools rip disks that are scratched the the errors make it to the image. That will cause problems.

I've got 1620 (three of them), 1640 and 1650. The 1650 is the best burner, followed by the 1640.
Go 1650 & top quality media & you will be happy.
