Small review Lightscribe versus Labelflash

I own the Nec 4551 Labelflash and Benq 1625 Lightscribe drives. I performed a small review with both label techniques. The review can be found overhere: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/flash-light/

Re: Small review Lightscribe versus Labelflash

Well, bang goes the "Lableflash lables a disc in 7 mins" theory. Looks like it was marketing for "7 mins at lableflash worst quality v 30 mins at best for lightscribe" so there is now no time difference (until lightscribe v2 is out with the new media)

Personally I dont like either as nothing can really beat a good printer and printable discs & yes I have just bought a lightscribe drive. I only find it good if I cant be bothered to get the printer setup to just put a small bit of txt on a disc.

One question. I know lightscribe makes the disc darker where it burns the disc, it looks like lableflash actually makes the disc lighter where it burns through (burns away the dye to a clear finish). Correct?

Re: Small review Lightscribe versus Labelflash

Hi
Good to see someone doing a practical comparison. Short & sweet. Nice.
Still doesn't do it for me though. (just too mean having bought a box of sharpies).

ScorpioSoft: Thanks for the informative review. It IS going to help us answering some questions that have been around for a while.

Would you be able to show us some screenshot of Labelflash on the data side? Thanks.

Re: Small review Lightscribe versus Labelflash

That's nice!!

Is it true that LS burners can burn to LS media ONLY (eg. not onl the data side like with LF)?

Re: Small review Lightscribe versus Labelflash

I think labelflash drives (for now NEC 3551&4551) is more interesting since for labeling on data-side they don't need special media... they write on every dvd-disc, don't they?

Yes, but only if there is some free space (without data), so that is not really an option.

Re: Small review Lightscribe versus Labelflash

Since your BenQ 1625 seems to have problems with latest lightscribe host engine and you use 1.0, I think your commentary on LS contrast is a bit fast...

Two passes (24min x 2) better quality on my LG 4166 with 1.4.56.1 LS engine :

on a verbatim CD 52X LS.

In the past I never found any quality difference between the Lightscribes driver versions. My commentary on the LS media was not that bad at all I believe
You can only test if you used that same picture (RW) on a Labelflash media and compare the two next to eachother..

I prefer the LS right now because it is not that shiny as the LF.

Good job but what a disappointment with regards both labelling speed and aesthetic quality of LF.

Re: Small review Lightscribe versus Labelflash

Nice test!
A question though: Does LF media have to be blue? It just seems easier to read from a lighter painted surface (like the LS for example).

Fot now there is only blue LF media. In the press release they mentioned also other colors but they are not on the market yet.

You got point! Lots of good media tends to be harmed by manipulation on the outer tracks (over 4G point) so better use external 10% of left space for "personalising" discs. Beside this not everybody here burns movies on DVD media, but also various data, so they can use some leftover space to label their media.

Look the cfreaks news for LS 1.2 : new 16X medium (MCC003=>004 ?), new background colors, and speed improvment via firmware update : cool, no need to buy another LS drive...
