Replacement for Lite-On SOSW-852S

My MV Mobeus (a Rock Computers UK brand) has an 852S which has just ceased to do anything except read some CDs. This is the second unit that has failed in exactly the same way in 2.5 years, the first being replaced under warrenty by Rock. I have waded through dozens of posts complaining about this model and since no-one seems to have come up with a solution, simple or otherwise am about to replace the drive.

It looks to me like the computer will only accept this model due to the placement of the eject button but I would really like to avoid giving Lite-On any more cash so can anyone help me with a suggestion for a replacement drive with the same functions? Nothing fancy, just something that will do the job. I've been offered a Panasonic unit (one of the UJ series, I think) - are they any good?

Thanks in advance.

With todays burners 2.5 years is not so bad.

Re: Replacement for Lite-On SOSW-852S

Panasonic? Hmm... from what I've heard the firmware support for these drives isn't exactly great.
How about a NEC? Their slim drives have a good reputation.

Re: Replacement for Lite-On SOSW-852S

I've read some bad customer reviews on the Panasonic and would avoid it. I've also read many NEC forum posts for NEC drives not reading -R burned discs. I've read some very good customer reviews on Samsung slim drives, and I've had 5 to 6 years and still counting flawless use with a Pioneer 107D on the PC. Based on reviews I've read and my experience I'd choose either the Samsung or Pioneer for myself.

I'll check around tomorrow to see what's available here in Chiang Mai. There's plenty of desktop gear but less in the way of notebook components. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Replacement for Lite-On SOSW-852S

I really haven't seen any posts on good notebook/laptop drives except for NEC's but i haven't looked in awhile. I'll be in the same boat when mine bites the dust. I have a Sony Q58A (SOSW-832S i think it is) but i'm not impressed with it but it works in a pinch.

Re: Replacement for Lite-On SOSW-852S

I ended up with a Sony/NEC Optiarc AD-7530A as being the only one available that fitted my computer. After three hours it's still working so I've got my fingers crossed. Thanks to those who posted.

Hi Wyndham,

I'm having a problem that is similar to yours. I also have a SOSW-852S that I need to replace on my laptop (Averatec 6220). Lite-On told me that if the dimensions of replacement DVD drive is the same, it should be compatible with my laptop.

What I want to ask you is: Is the Optiarc you bought for you computer the same dimension with the SOSW-852S?

Also, is it right the dimensions differ among the drives?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Replacement for Lite-On SOSW-852S

Looking for info on this drive as well and suitable replacements. My Averatec 6200 series laptop uses this drive and for whatever reason it keeps popping open now. Anyway, I'm thinking it is possible a hardware failure and need to find a replacement drive that hopefully isn't an arm and a leg.
