Optiarc NEC AD7170S any good? - Club CDFreaks

Hi everyone

Just ordered a Optiarc NEC AD7170S from OcUk, did I make a good choice? I read a few reviews for other Optiarc drives and they got good reviews

i have an optiarc AD 7173A at the moment didn't think much of it really but it's done its time...
bought a new drive yesterday

Hi

I have the 7170S. But think the Samsung SH-S203B to be a far better drive.
The 7170S will not let you down, but probably won't inspire you either.
Liggy & Dees' patched f/w a must too.

Due to the problem afflicting many NEC drives not reading burned -R media including my 3520, I'd not consider another NEC drive. Hopefully yours won't be afflicted, but read posts at http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=209168 for more details on this problem.

Thanks for the post. I may look into the Samsung SH-S203B as a second drive. The NEC will mainly be used for ripping a variety of disks, rather then burning. Are NEC's accurate readers?

The 7170S with L & Ds' f/w is a good reader & quite fast too.

Hi All.... Need some advice, I'm looking for a Sata writer for a new system I'm building and my options here where I live seem to be Nec 7170, Samsung SH-S183, Samsung S203, Lite-On LH-20A1L, Pioneer DVR-212D and Plextor PX-755SABPS (Plextor costing 2 to 3 times more then the rest). Most of these boast mostly of speed which is NOT a big factor for me but quality writing is as I burn lots of music cd's (Hate fasle & bad sounding cd's) and DVD movies. I have a couple of older Plextors and 2 Nec's and all have served me well but I haven´t looked it to burners for some time so any and all advice would be most helpfull.
