Liteon SHM-165P6S or Pioneer DVR-111D

hello all,

I am considering buying either a
Liteon SHM-165P6S or
Pioneer DVR-111D

I want to ask which player is better if I only want to burn data onto DVD+R or DVD-R, don't care about RW and may get DL in the future if DL becomes cheaper than single layer which I assume won't happen.

Don't care about CD's either since I have a seperate CD writer and also don't care about making backups of games since after researching it seems to not be possible to do with the latest games. Maybe in the future I might want to make backups of DVD movies but I think this is unlikely or only in rare cases.

I'm mainly concerned about its ability to read DVD's which have scratches/fingerprints/defects apart from its ability to produce good quality DVD+R and DVD-R burns.

I am able to get both drives at the same price.

Re: Liteon SHM-165P6S or Pioneer DVR-111D

hello & welcome

The Pioneer probably has the edge in absolute DVD burning quality on first class media, but the Lite-On is generally a more versatile and entertaining drive to own. The Litey is also the better reader for marginal discs and allows quality scanning to boot.

My SH 182M reads dash media just fine, so does my SH182D.

Liteon SHM-165P6S and Pioneer DVR-111D are very good drives. Owning both of them will make the best of the world.

Re: Liteon SHM-165P6S or Pioneer DVR-111D

I bought the DVR-111D but so far only got coaster DVD-R. On the CQ DVD-R, it burns up to 97% and fails. This is at 12x. On a Fuji DVD-R, I burned at 4x, it finished ok but the disc can't play back in PC or any player. The only media that I burned successfully so far is Memorex DVD+RW at 4x. I'm still trying to figure out where the problem is.

Use better media or burn at least SLOWER.

You might need a faster PC or making sure that not too many tasks are running in the background including P2Ps, anti-trojan-virus, internet, games, graphics etc, check or kill all running task before burning. And most importantly that the drive is installed properly, check that it's connected to primary master, correct jumper on the drive, 80-conductor Ultra DMA IDE/ATA interface cable used and Ultra DMA 4 is turned on in the CMOS setup etc.

So did I. What an absolute piece of junk it was. Couldn't read a single DVD it created. I traded mine in for a Pioneer DVR-111D and not only has it worked perfectly so far, but CAN also read the disks made with the POS Samsung SH-S182M as well. So save the Samsung's "coasters" and get a real drive like the Pioneer or Lite-on and forget you ever heard of Samsung.

Don't even waste your time troubleshooting the 182M/D drive if it is having trouble reading disks it created in the first place, just get rid of it...trust me, it's junk. I've had 3. So far 1 of those could read its own work (sometimes)...and I don't expect that to last long or be reliable.

*disclaimer* - This was all with the Samsung SH-S182M (read: POS-182M) as a single master on the secondary IDE with the proper cable, in a pristine, lean running, well made and cared for PC, good power supply, etc etc etc.

Re: Liteon SHM-165P6S or Pioneer DVR-111D

I'm also contemplating this purchase, but I will be doing back-ups, does either one have an edge over the other? The Pioneer is only slightly more expensive than the Lite-On so price isn't really a concern. But, I do like the ability to Bitset/Booktype (even if I have to crossflash the drive) and will be using TY and Verb's consistently. I don't really do much with CD-R/W's anymore, just an occasional data disc, but not very often. My current drive is just what was stock in my computer, a NEC-ND6500A and still rips effectively but it's quickly dying on burns.

So, with that in mind which one should I go for?

H is with LightScribe, P is sans LS. Lite-Ons seem to be quite tolerant re. power.
