Good DVD burner for DVD backups??

I recently purchased a LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM A Model LH-20A1S. It worked fine for 2 DVD+R burns using DVD Fab for decrypting and the old DVD Decrypter for the actual burning. After only 2 burns, I get Device IO error and the burn fails. I used to get this error when I had a bad blank disc with a much older Sony DVD Writer. I got the same error on 4 different blank discs with the LITE-ON after 2 successful burns with the exact same media.

I did notice that once the burn fails it leaves a quarter inch ring around the outer edge of the DVD+R?? Why is this?

I am sending this new writer back to NewEgg and cannot decide what is the best model to buy without spending more than $50. I am considering the BenQ DW1670 or SONY DRU830A. I will only use the drive for backing up DVD movies. So, I am just looking for dual layer writer that is very dependable that is available in beige.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

what brand of media are you using? do you have the most recent firmware for that burner? try using imgburn to burn.

Re: Good DVD burner for DVD backups??

I am using verbatim media. It is not clear to me exactly what firmware is. The adrive came with no firmware disc or drivers, only nero. It did burn successfully twice and it now suddenly fails - could this be a firmware issue? Where do I find the firmware? Should I just google it?

I recommend getting this burner if you get to it before they're gone.

Re: Good DVD burner for DVD backups??Lite-On:LH20A1S???

Just wanted to add that I uninstalled the lite-on drivers and this drive is back to burning lightning fast. I take a Verbatim DVD+R of the very bottom of the spindle just in case I had some bad ones.

I am now wondering if this writer is going to be that picky about media, which my old BenQ DQ60 was not at all. Or is it going to fail again. I am all ears for any comments and will update this thread with the final results of the LH-20A1S after I use it for a while.

Re: Good DVD burner for DVD backups??

The LO you have should be ok. The BenQ DQ60 is not a real BenQ but made by TEAC i believe. BenQ 1600,1620,1625,1640,1650,and 1655 are real BenQ's the 1670 is not. The BenQ 1610 is a +R writer only i think it was but i could be wrong and is not cross flashable to 1620. The 1600 is cross flashable to 1620. Been awhile so my memory might be failing me. All recent BenQ's are LO.
