MKM001 2.4x DVD+R DL burned @8x
NEC ND-3540A FW 1.W4. Media sold as Verbatim 3pack (Made in Singapore)

Tried twice. Yikes!

High PIF spikes at around 7 gigs. Dee-27 exhibits the same problem (click here). Otherwise it's a good burn especially for overspeeding almost 4 times its rated speed.

Re: zevia takes a look at NEC ND-3540A firmware 1.W4

Conclusion: In my opinion, the NEC ND-3540A is a very good drive although it needs more time until the firmware(s) is mature enough.

Pros:
- Supports overspeeding on quality media. Thanks to Liggy & Dee.
- Supports high write speed 8x on Verbatim/MKM DVD+R DL
- Supports bitsetting for DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL.
- Very quite drive
- Low and afordable price.

Cons:
- Active OPC too sensitive in some cases.
- Only supports read pressed DL media at 12x.
- Does not support overburning 4599 DVD+R and 99 minute CD-R media.

Re: zevia takes a look at NEC ND-3540A firmware 1.W4

Thanks zevia,
It took a lot of time and effort to produce all these scans, everyone appreciates your work.

How did you luck out and get a 3540????

Re: zevia takes a look at NEC ND-3540A firmware 1.W4

LOL zevia.. I knew you're making a review of some kind as you didn't post any scans of the "new drive" (I must say I was 90% that it is a Nec 3540). Heh today I'm going to buy a Nec 3540.. wanted to buy it yesterday but hadn't had time to get one. I hope I'll get a good one.. if not it'll be good for scanning (my LiteOn is dying.. the tray is unstable and flips discs up at ejecting.. already ruined one of my CDs and scrached some DVDs). =)

Re: zevia takes a look at NEC ND-3540A firmware 1.W4

Another great NEC ND-3540 review, thanks zevia.

Comparison to "same media burned on other drives" can only be made if you burn the exactly same disc(s) in those drives and then make a quality scan with NEC 3540 (if you prefer this drive for scanning).
But this is only a input and not intended to take away anything of the great effort you put up.
Keep up the good work.

Re: zevia takes a look at NEC ND-3540A firmware 1.W4

@all, thanks for the complements. Yes it was a long but enjoyable work, especially wasting more than 50 disks.

@Dee, I put my test here in NEC forum so other 3540 owners or prospective users would benefit. Based on my observation, the DVD Burner User Reviews and Comments hits significantly less viewers than the NEC Forum (ie. 5 vs 70 views at a time). In any case, it's up to you.

@Quikee... yeah, you were right. Now it's time for you to get a 3540. Oops, there's one in your sig now. That fast!?? Ok, then it's time for you to get a 716A. (so you can finish your "work")

@pinto2, yes.
