BenQ are better readers.
Get a BenQ1640, both a great burner AND reader

I won't stick an old dvd in my benq, it's my scanner, my lg burns better disks faster. My nec's are better all around tho. Close call.

Liteons are well known to be good at reading bad discs!

Re: which dvd burner is the best reading

Plextors (at least mine) do an excellent job reading scratched/damaged discs...

Re: which dvd burner is the best reading

stay away from nec 355x or 455x
they have no riplock(locks the rip speed)
for damaged single layer, a slow ripper is going to be hard to find
software solution like dvdfab?

Re: which dvd burner is the best reading

My 2 different lite-ons are horrible. My old 2500 nec is only so-so but my benq1655 is an outstanding reader. Its related to the phillips mentioned above. Its also a top rater burner and has a very accurate ability to test including jitter readings in nero cd-speed.
