Driver for ND-2500A

Hi there. I was wondering if someone out there can help me. I recently changed jobs and moved by external DVD burner ND-2500A to my new job. After plaugging it in, the computer does not recognise the burner and after finding the devise manager, the status says that a driver is needed. I cannot remember actualy having a driver in the first place or might have misplaced it. Can someone help me by either telling me where to get one or can provide me with one. NEC says they do not support OEM and I bought this from eBay almost 2 years ago. Someone help please....I am going mad.

Re: Driver for ND-2500A

Hi,

normally, no additional driver is needed, unless you are running Windows 98. If a recent Windows (ME, 2000, XP) is complaining about missing drivers, then it is either messed up or your external enclosure is rather exotic. In that case you should try getting drivers from the manufacturer of your enclosure.

Also, appropriate drivers for your USB 2.0 chipset is needed. These are part of recent Service Packs for Win2000 (SP4) and XP (SP2). In case you are running Win ME or 98, then you need USB 2.0 drivers from the mainboard manufacturer (or the manuafacturer of USB add-on card).
And last but not least, Windows NT4 and 95 do not support USB(2.0)

A friend mentioned that to me. But all I did was detach it from the last computer and reinstall it on to this one. This is a new computer and it is running on XP. I also am quite sure that service pack 2 is already on this computer.

I have opened the case to try and find bumbers, but I am not sure what I should be looking for an what a chipset looks like. The exterior case has a model CD-509-U2. Any afvise?

Make sure, SP2 is indeed installed. Also, if this is a business computer of a company you work for, then there might be security policies applied, that prevents users from installing external drives.

Do a search with your favourite search engine. It seems, that this enclosure is equipped with Genesys Logic chipset.
(Is it this one? http://www.chronos.com.tw/products/u.../cd503u102.htm)

YEs, YES...that is the enclosure. Someone said to me the problem is not wioth the ROM, but with the enclousre. There has to be a driver for the enclosure and Windows don't automatically install it. Should I write to the copany or is there an easier way to get one? I am asking because I just realised that it is a Taiwan company. Thanks for helping clear that up.

Re: Driver for ND-2500A

Hi,

there are drivers available, but only for Windows 98. For any more recent Windows, the necessary drivers are built into the operating system. So there are no drivers from the manufacturer available - they even don't develop any.

Windows does install its drivers automatically - if you are allowed to do so. And as you mentioned correctly, it is the enclosure, not the drive, that matters.

Re: Driver for ND-2500A

Any recommendations as to what I can do to overcome this problem? Also if I bought a new external DVD ROM, will I have this same problem?

if this is a computer in a business environment (I asked you to confirm), then you can't do anything but asking the administrators or the people that maintain the computers.
I suspect, that any other external drive won't work, too.

This is a business environment. As the IT management is outsourced, I will have to check with the guy when he comes in the next time.
