Sony DRU-830A (SH-S182D OEM): post your scans and questions here

The Sony DRU-830A is based on Samsung SH-S182D using Mediatek MT1898E 0617-AOBL P2KN9 chipset.

Since Sony is using so many manufacture drives we have decided to start posting each model in the forum relating to the hardware.

So let's see some scans.

MCC004 (Verbatim 16x DVD+R made by CMC) burned at 18x

1. Burned at 18x in 5:48 mins
2. Scanned in Lite-On SHM-165P6S @4x CLV
3. TRT in NEC 4570A

My MCC004 CMC made always gives high PI errors in the beginning. Nevertheless it's a good burn.

YUDEN000T03 (Taiyo Yuden unbranded 16x DVD+R) burned at 18x

1. Burned at 18x in 5:20 mins
2. Scanned in Lite-On SHM-165P6S @4x CLV
3. Scanned in BenQ DW1655 @4x CLV
4. Scanned in BenQ DW1655 @8x CAV
5. TRT in NEC 4570A
6. TRT in BenQ DW1655

Transfer Rate Test on 4570A shows some slowdowns at the end of the disc but TRT in DW1655 is smooth. Nice burn.

Re: Sony DRU-830A (SH-S182D OEM): post your scans and questions here

Thanks zevia. So why wouldn't Samsung implement the UDMA-4 interface in their own drives through firmware? In rereading the review by Jan70, the S182D bursted at 28 MB/s, which almost seems like better than UDMA-2, but not quite UDMA-4.

I wonder if Sony will create a 830A-R based off the LO or Optiarc 18x drives.

What is the bitsetting function like with the Sony? Is it a temporary only setting as with the Samsung or can it be made permanent?

There's another thread here that thanks to agent009 shows a picture of the Sony and the Samsung side by side.

Thanks zevia for this information and tests.

Regarding drives MediaTek chip, I think it's sufficient to say it is a MT1898E.
Next part in your line is production time, year+week. (Don't know about "AOBL" though, but it's on all "Samsung SH-S182" chips I've seen around). "P2KN9" is most probably just a serial number.

Picture at right is drives SDRAM memory. (The more interesting part eeprom is on opposite side of pcb.)

Hope someone here is able to interpret and share more information about markings on MT1898E chip and what type of eeprom these drives use.

Full pcb image. You can clearly see "SH-S182D/M" above the eeprom.

Yes, unfortunately the bitsetting is temporary.

For DVD-RAM, 4.27GB is a full disc.

I'm not familiar with eeproms used on Samsung drives but that chip you are reffering to as eeprom looks to me more like a drive motor controller.
Have you checked on the other side of pcb for additional chip.

EDIT! (after opening my drive).

Yes, you are right the chip located at the right bottom corner is not the EEPROM, it is the Drive IC: Renesas R2S30204FP.

In the attached picture you will see the location of the EEPROM, which is Macronix MX25L1605A (in some other revision it could also be ATMEL AT26DF161-SU).
