SB06 for the SH-S182M does not correct the Lead-In issue. Samsung just does not have a clue.

They have, but they seem to ignore their retail customers

Re: SH-S182D DVD-R Lead-In

Hello everybody.

I need to replace my Pioneer DVR-106D, Revision X612, in my Power Mac G5 dual 2GHz that has stopped working. Can not read nor write to any media, bought or burned.

What I thought about doing is; take the DVD out of a La Cie d2 external cabinet and put it in the G5 and buy a newer Samsung SH-S202N for the La Cie cabinet.

Info on the La Cie d2 DVD:
DVD Writer Model SH-S182M/LCAH
F/W (Firmware): LA00
H/W (Hardware): A
VER. (Version): M
Manufactured: July 2007
Factory ID: P

I have read this tread and my perceptive of what I need to do before proceeding is to update the firmware to SB 06 and fix the Lead In problem for the SH-S182M. In what order is it recommended?

For this job I am using a PC running XP.

I have downloaded TS-H652D and TS-H652M, but unable to download SFDNWIN 3.25.4. Any idea of other location where I can get it?

Also - not sure what to do about the SB 06 update. Did download SH-S182M_SB06.EXE but it does not update or even start the update process. It just opens a program window where I can chose DVD burners and nothing else. It says Download File: Not Open. I have tried both of the two buttons in the upper left corner of the application without any luck.

I assume the SH-S202N is OK the way it is. If not, please advice on what I can do to improve it.

SH-S202N/RSMN (Retail).
F/W (Firmware): SB01
H/W (Hardware): A
VER. (Version): N
Manufactured: September 2007
Factory ID: P

Any help is much appreciated.

Are you sure if your drive is affected by the Lead-In issue? Already asked LaCie support?

What for do you need version 3.25.4? Newer versions also support the -NOCHECK commandline (CASE SENSITIVE)

Forget it. The Lead-In issue is not fixed with that firmware. The only firmware known to fix the Lead-In issue is TS-H652M KC03 from Samsung Korea. Links are given some posts above.

You can't directly flash a retail firmware onto an OEM drive. You might also have a second look into the FAQ and into the HOWTO flash firmware articles please.

Re: SH-S182D DVD-R Lead-In

Wow! Thank you mciahel for a very speedy respond - and thanks for the welcome.

I will browse trough the FAQ as suggested and also email LaCie and ask for the Lead-In issue and if SB06 is already included in their firmware and If it is not if they can provide me with an update. If such an update will make a difference to performance and/or support for newer media.

Maybe I can just put the SH-182M in the G5 as it is, without any flashing.

When I have an answer from LaCie and completed the job I will post the result here.

I bet they "never heard of such a problem"

OEM firmwares must not necessarily follow the firmwares for the retail products, so don't expect an answer from them. Asking if there is some newer firmware for that drive in general is okay.

I'd try that at first. If you'd like to sacrifice two DVD-R discs, then you can find out if your drive has a problem with Lead-In yourself.

Yes, the codeguys links are working again.
I tried links and google searches and everything connected to them was down last night.

No. The 182F is a different drive.

Re: SH-S182D DVD-R Lead-In

Referring to my post further up on this tread:

LaCie said that they will post any updates on their website "as known issues with existing drives become known to us".

I have burned a CD that is working OK. Not sure if I require a DVD to test Lead-Inn issues.

However the SH-S185 M drive works fine on Mac G5. I did not flash the drive of any updates so it still has the original LA00.

More info: http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/powermac/

The new SH-S202N/RSMN (Retail) also works fine in the LaCie cabinet.

This issue shows up especially with DVD-R. No problem with CD-R.

So which is better the 'CDFreaks Edition SB04' or the 'TS-H652D KC03'?

The latter is newer, that's why I am using that firmware on my 182D.

KC03 is better. It's newer, it gets rid of the lead-in problem, and I believe it even supports auto-bitsetting.

The OEM firmwares for the Asian market are always better. It's like Buffalo firmware with Pioneer drives, or Hitachi firmware with LG drives. Everything that should have been done in the first place, but didn't get added to the North American or European market firmware, you can usually find in these other firmwares. It's almost like a maxim or something.

I can't confirm the auto-bitsetting, but I agree to both other points.

Seriously? Are there any reliable sources?

That was an obviously personal opinion based on the fact that the Asian market drives appear to always have features included by default that don't seem to be enabled in Europe or North American drives. Auto-bitsetting or DMA4 being just two examples. To me, that makes them better. This is of course, just a generalization, but you get the point.

Re: SH-S182D DVD-R Lead-In

Philips SPD2412T is another SH-S182D clone.
No Lead-In issue with latest firmware P1.5.

Re: SH-S182D DVD-R Lead-In

Good call, put the philips 1.5 to my 'mad dog' burner since it's slightly newer (1 month) than the kc03 firmware. One note though, use the sfdnwin.exe from another firmware package, the philips one gave me an error.

Re: SH-S182D DVD-R Lead-In

Thanks to mciahel's info in the announcement thread, crossflashed my TS-H652M 0414 to Philips SPD6002T P1.3. The lead-in issue seems to be fixed and it also supports auto-bitsetting.
