What is it
The Patch Utility is used to customize your firmware to have the features provided by the utility. The advantage of a Patch Utility is that you can use the firmware version you prefer for your drive and just apply the patches that you want to have.

This is what the Patch Utility looks like after you run it:



Note that no patch options are displayed until you load your firmware. The Patch utility will check the firmware and see what patches can be applied:



Select the patches you require or use the "Select All" to select all patches:



Click the "Save as" button to save you new firmware under the name that you want. The screen will look like this if the patch file was saved successfully:

Current Patches Available

18x Drives

Increase SL Read Speed (FRSL)
This patch currently increase the DVD+R and DVD-R 12x read speed to 14x. 12x is still selectable if require.
Note: Can cause DVD-R TRT timeout issues with Nero CD/DVD speed 4.7.7.15 and later.

Increase DL Read Speed (FRDL)
This patch currently increase the 8x read speed to 12x for both DVD R9 and DVD-Video DL. 8x is still selectable if require.

22x Drives

Increase DL Read Speed to 16x (DL16) <-- New
This patch will increase the 12x read speed of DL media to 16x. The next lower speed is 12x.

20x and 22x Drives

Increase 16x SL Read Speed to 18x (FR)
This patch will increase the 16x read speed to 18x. The drives maximum read speed will still be shown as 16x but it will instead read at 18x. The next lower speed is still 12x.

Enhanced OPC (EOPC) <-- New
This patch adjusts the WOPC to improve burn quality at all burn speeds.

Remove video riplock (RLR)
This patch removes the video riplock that only reduces the read speed when trying to rip a video DVD. This patch is intended to reduce the time required to make personal backups of videos that you own.

Fast Burn (12x PCAV) (FB)
This patch will change the 12x burning method from CAV to PCAV. This means that a disc can be burned at 12x in around 6 minute, usually with little to no lose of quality.

18x, 20x and 22x Drives

Retain book type after eject (BS)
This patch allows the setting of the book type without a disc in the drive and will hold this book type until the drive is reset/de-powered. No longer is the book type cleared when the disc is ejected.

Default book type DVD-ROM (ROMD)
This patch sets the book type to DVD-ROM when the drive is reset. This option can only be enabled if the "Retain book type after eject" option is enabled, otherwise the first time you opened the tray the book type would be cleared. You can still change the book type with this patch applied.

RPC1 (Region free) (RPC1)
Converts the drive to an RPC1 drive, commonly know as making the drive region free.


Note:
* Also supported is the Sony DRU-830A and DRU-840A.
* Currently this Patch Utility works with 18x, 20x and 22x drives.
* I recommend always starting with stock firmware and applying all of the patches you require before saving.
* See the Firmware Section of the Samsung forum FAQ for instruction on extracting the BIN file from the Samsung EXE file.
* See the Samsung forum FAQ for instructions on how to flash your patched firmware.
* Make sure you use TSDNWIN to flash the patched firmware to a 22x drive.

Update - works great on the S203B!

C0deKing, I get an error when changing the 203N firmware, it won't accept the 'default booktype to rom' setting, it says something like "insufficient space to appy the patch". I was appyling the bottom three patches.

Good to see 3 patches still work with the new 22x drives. I'm hoping the 18x read speed patch is missing due to the drive already supporting 18x read.

The specs list 16x read speed.

The 18x read speed patch for the 22x drives will be fixed in the next release.

Does the Set default to DVD-ROM change the setting for all types or just +R and DL?

The Samsung only has bitsetting on and off for all +R/W media, so DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL will all be bitset to DVD-ROM when set to DVD-ROM.

But even with DVD-ROM as default, you can still turn bitsetting off if you don't want a +RW to be changed.

Also remember that a +RW will only be changed to a DVD-ROM if you format the disc, not with quick erase.

Why it doesn't work on the FR-FB firmware of SH-S203B? Is it because the firmware has been pre-patched?

The patches are not reversible, so if the firmware already has patches applied then the patch options are not provided.

I recommend always starting with stock firmware and applying all of the patches you require before saving.
