Nice.
I would also include Sony DRU-830A firmwares (they have different bit setting behaviour if I remember correctly, also they are UDMA 4) and the TS-H652D/M KC* series. The latter, since these are the only recent firmwares that don't have the Lead-In problem the 18x drives (inluding Sony) suffer from.

Thanks Michael. H652 seems to work OK. Only planning to support the bitsetting patches, for 18x drives, at this time. Does the 830A require the bitsetting patch?

If I remember correctly, then the Sony firmware has Auto-Bitsetting for +R/+R DL, not sure about +RW. I'll have to crossflash the drive to check (at least for the SL variants)

EDIT: I remembered wrong. The Sony firmware also needs software support for bitsetting, just like the Samsungs. No auto-bitsetting!

A quick visit to congrat and thank C0deking for the video riplock patch.

Considering the 203B must be among the 3-4 best existing readers of bad or damaged discs out there, it's really convenient that it can now also be a fast ripper!

Re: Patch Utility for Samsung MTK based DVD Writers v2.3.1 ***NEW***

I still have a patch protection issue with the 18x firmware but I'm confident I can defeat it. One 182D dead, one to go. Hopefully Kanalratte's magic can help me to restore the dead one, so I can keep working in the dangerous areas, knowing it can be revived.

However, I'm away for a while, so there may be a few weeks delay before the version supporting the 18x drives can be released.

First I hope you get your 182 back, it's a good drive. It takes whatever time it takes, just know that your work is appreciated.

Re: Patch Utility for Samsung MTK based DVD Writers v2.3.1 ***NEW***

Nice work C0deking. So I assume this patcher can be used for newer firmwares in the future without having to release new versions of FB/FR firmwares for individual models?

I am using a 203D retail, already flashed with SB00-fb+fr firmware previously. So can I just download the stock firmware, patch with this utility and reflash the drive?

Re: Patch Utility for Samsung MTK based DVD Writers v2.3.1 ***NEW***

Thanks for everyones kind words in this thread. Always appreciated.

I'm very confident that with Kanalratte's help, my drive will become a zombie drive, as he calls it (restored from the dead).

Bloodlust, I have done my best to make the patches auto adjust to new firmware releases. Four out of the five possible patches worked with the new 22x firmwares, even though I'd never seem this firmware until recently but I will try to continue to check the patches as new firmware comes out, just in case it could cause a drive to have a problem.

However, there is always a risk and that is why there is the warning message at the time of saving. If anyone is worried, then they can post here and see if someone else has already tried the patches with the same model and version. I hope others will reply to these requests and put the person, trying the patch for the first time, at ease.

At this time I would be very surprised if any 202/203/204 firmware currently available, would have an issue.

And yes to your other question about patching the stock version to get the same FB + FR firmware and whatever else you want.

Hi and Welcome!

since the 203P is a 203D plus Lightscribe, anything regarding the 203D is also applicable to your 203P.

Can someone guide me on how to patch firmware using the all in one update from samsung? The only thing it extracts is the autorun.bin. Thanks.

What program did you use to extract the firmware file from the .exe? I used 7Zip myself, and it worked just fine.

Autorun.bin is the extracted firmware. Copy it elsewhere, rename as you like and patch then.

does this riplock apply to genuine dvds only?

anyway, i'm wondering about the sense of this riplock stuff. could unlocking it damage the drive? if it's not the case, then why do manufacturers put this stuff in firmwares?

i read somewhere that the reason for such speed limitations is (may be) that the drive would be too loud, which could be annoying especially when playing a dvd movie for example. is this the answer?

According to COdeKing, it applied to DVDs with region code.

No.

Movies play at 1x, but I suppose the drive could be spinning faster all the time. The drive might slow down after a time (but it may not either).

Regards

thanks for your response. about the possibility of damage caused by too high speed: i remember those times when cd drives reached the 50x speed. and then they stopped increasing those numbers coz faster drives would crash cds put into them.

yet, i'm aware of cases when even these 50x drives crashed some weaker-than-average cds and of course the drive became unusable after the accident. and it's not urban legend, it happened to my friends

so i'm not fully convinced by your 'No' that this speed unleash is 100% secure

to make it clear: is it about enabling the drive to read region-locked dvds at the same speed it reads region-free discs? if so, then... i'm convinced
