Newbie here: Got TS-H552B working but...

Hi,

I just got a TS-H552B last week to put into a system that I'm building for a relative as a gift. She lives on the "other" coast so I'm trying to give her a system that'll be reliable and I know that works.

I just got around to trying to burn some DVD+R and DVD-R this weekend, and initially ran into problems with both. The burn would complete, but then verify would always fail. This was with some 8x DVD+R that I had from Microcenter ("Platinum", shows up as "Verbatim" in Nero Info) and some 4x DVD-R (from CompUSA). Upgrading Nero to 6.6.x didn't help.

I was about to give up and maybe go buy a different drive, but I found firmware TS08 on Samsung's ODD (funny acronym ) website. I flashed the drive to TS08 from the original TS05, and then tried burns with the 8x DVD+R and the 4x DVD-R again, and everything including the verify worked. Also the resulting DVD+R and DVD-R were both readable on a DVD drive on my laptop (Compaq).

The problem that I noticed was that when I was burning the 4x DVD-R, Nero only offered 2x as the burn speed with no choice to change.

My son tried these same 4x DVD-R on his PC with a different burner (not sure which) and it burned at 4x.

Does anyone know if there is something I can do to enable the TS-H552B to burn DVD-R at higher than 2x?

I haven't tried any CD-R yet, but will today.

If the only problem is that it won't burn DVD-R faster than 2x, it'll probably be ok for her, but I just want to have it work reliably (so she doesn't call me to fix it ).

Thanks in advance, Jim

Re: Newbie here: Got TS-H552B working but...

Hi,

Yes, DMA is enabled and shows "Ultra DMA Mode" (this is Win2K). One of the 1st things I checked when I installed the OS.

Plus, as I mentioned in my original post, it IS able to burn DVD+R as 8x. It's just the DVD-R writing that is stuck at 2x.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

Your -R media might not be supported for higher speeds. Use DVD Identifier to read the media code of the -R disk.

ala,

DVD Identifier didn't have it in its database, but could only identify the manufacturer as AML.

I tried another program, DvdInfoPro, and got the following:

Re: Newbie here: Got TS-H552B working but...

black_udder,

Pls don't get me wrong, but how do you know that? Is it documented somewhere?

BTW, I also found this post:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....t=ts-h552b+aml

where it shows a "TS-H552B DVD-R Media List", and it seems to indicate "AML" and speed "4"?

Code:
Manufacturer Rated Speed 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.0x 2770KBps
Write Strategy Speed 4.0x 5540KBps
There is no Available Write Descriptor for 4x.

Forget this list as it is obviously buggy. Get the latest MCSE (see signature) and use it on the firmware you use and let's hope it is accurate this time .

Re: Newbie here: Got TS-H552B working but...

ala,

I gather that the latest version (1.0.4.2 19) doesn't support the TS08 firmware yet (understandable since it seems it came out just last week )?

Re: Newbie here: Got TS-H552B working but...

I have checked TS08 and US05 after 1.0.4.2 was released, they seam to work.

Re: Newbie here: Got TS-H552B working but...

ala,

Thanks.

Just for my understanding, what does it mean where "Manufacturer Rated Speed" and "Write Strategy Speed" are 4, but "Available Write Descriptor" is 2x?

Do you think that this is just because the media manufacturer forgot to set the "Available Write Descriptor" for 4x, or are they (the manufacturer) trying to say that this media should only be written at 2x (CLV), even though the other two parameters say that the media is 4x?

Available write descriptors is what speeds that the firmware of the samsung supports for this media. It's nothing that can be set on the media.

BTW - the quality of the AML media is extremely poor - that is most likely why samsung limits the speed to 2x.

Re: Newbie here: Got TS-H552B working but...

OC-Freak,

Thanks for the info.

Re. the quality of the AML DVD-R, understood. As I mentioned in my original post, this burner is going into a system that I'm building for a relative.

She wants a DVD burner in the system, but this is the first time I've worked with one, and so I wanted to check it out so that when I passed it along to her, I had some idea of how it would work. So, when I bought the media at a really good price, I figured that it'd give me a chance to mess around with the burner, give the burner a workout, and get some experience (which I guess I'm getting "the hard way" ).

Overall, I really do appreciate all of the help here. You all have been great, especially with all my questions!!
