New SH-S203B problems Linux & XP

I have just bought a new Samsung SH-S203B. It is connected to a SATA PCI card as my motherboard doesn't support SATA. I am running both Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring and Windows XP on a dual boot PC. In both OS's the drive has been recognised and can read DVDs/CDs no problem.

When I come to burn a disc is when all my problems start:

Under Linux using K3B as the burner as soon as I press the Burn button the PC freezes toatlly and I have to button it! Using NeroLinux the disc burns (or so it seems) and comes up saying it's burned OK, but I can't eject the disc or see the drive anymore without a reboot. When I do get the disc out I can see files on the disc but nothing can be opened/played.

Under XP, again the drive is seen and can read discs. When I use Nero to burn a disc it starts and finishes but I get the same issues as Nero Linux.

I just want to know if there is anything I can do about it or am I lookng at a faulty drive? I've booted into windows and run the firmware upgrade which seemed to go OK.

Any suggestions would be welcome at this point as I'm pulling my hair out over this.

Cheers.

Please tell us, what controller you are using. Chipset and operating mode of the controller (RAID, non-RAID) are essential information, since not all SATA controllers support optical drives completely.
If your controller is set to a RAID operation mode, then change that. If this is not possible, then you need another card since RAID and ODD are not compatible.

Aspi is for Windows 95, not for NT >5.x.

It's a Via VT6421. Now you've said that I think is RAID but I'm not sure! I'm looking to see if I can change that.

Ouch! There are some known compatibility issues with that controller (see FAQ).

Maybe you should also consider getting a Silicon Image based controller for your drive. There is not much fun with SATA ODD and VIA SATA controllers

I Thought yoyu might say something like that! My Dad has a controller he's not using so I might try that, not sure what it is yet though. I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers for advice so far.
