Hi,

I'm interested to buy Nero Linux 3 for burning raw video footages (DV & HDV) on 50GB Blu-ray disks as backup of DV&HDV tapes and for archieving purposes for NLE edited video master. Beside this I also wish to create normal DVD and Blu-ray disks as distribution format for normal playback on standalone players.

1) Any experiences using Nero Linux 3 for Blu-ray burning?

2) I also wonder if Nero Linux 3 will work with the external LaCie d2 Blu-ray burner when connected with Firewire to a Linux PC? Will any specific Linux HW Blu-ray drivers be required beyond Nero Linux 3?

Normally everything should work fine. Each release of Nero Linux is fully tested with BD-RE (single and double layer) and BD-R (also single and double layer).
The only thing you have to take care at, is the UDF revision that will be used. In single-session discs, this will not be a problem. But if you plan to make multisession on a BD-R, the burn engine will use UDF 2.60 (required by the specification), and then you disc will be unreadable on most Linux (and Windows) systems.

It _should_ work. But you have to know that the FireWire support of the Linux kernel is not as good as the USB support... From what I see regarding your product, is that it alse has a USB plug. So you can try to use it over FireWire, and if you experience some problems, switch to USB afterwards. From its specifications, I see that it can burn BD only up to 2x, so neither FW nor USB will be the bottleneck in data throughput. (FYI, 2x is a little bit less than 9MB/sec for BD).

Hm, I wonder for which systems UDF 2.6 are readable, now or later

2) I haven't bought the LaCie d2 yet, it is currently of most interest as portable, external device. But I had overseen it had only 2x BD-R(E) writing speed.
The new Sony BWU200S, though internal and non-portable has doubled the BD writing speed to 4x

Regarding Firewire, I hadn't used it practically on Linux before the last weekend. Then I connected a Datavideo DN-300 native DV&HDV HDD recorder with a FAT32 file system. This Firewire device popped up automatically on my openSUSE 10.3 desktop as a portable disk (just like an USB), and it worked quite well for copy&paste files both ways to and from the internal Linux hard disk file systems

UDF 2.60 is readable under Windows if you install InCD Reader. I also remember that I saw a patch for the Linux kernel supporting 2.50 and 2.60, but I must admit that I never tested it.

Regarding the FireWire, accessing a HDD is much less complicated than burning a disc .
